Jeff - if for some reason you find your self on I94 instead of I75 / I69 and are in the mood to stop for a beverage and a boat ride - the invitation is open.

We're easy to find off I94 East of 23 a few miles.
There's always something new to learn.

Just went there last week with the kids. It's a beautiful place but a tourist trap.

After they rape you at Mackinac, if you have time, head north to Sault Sainte Marie for the Soo Locks, then head for Whitefish Bay and the Lighthouse Museum, where they have the Edmund Fitzgerald's bell. And you'll see beautiful Lake Superior.

Whitefish Bay, Lake Superior, about 15 miles from the Edmund Fitzgerald wreck.

All of Michigan is awesome like that.

If it were not in such dis-repair,
and the structure of how things are done here
were changed, it would be a tourist spot.

Where else can you get all four seasons in such spectacular fashion,
with all the colors, and awe inspiring scenery, plus hunting to boot.

Now...if we could just fix the unemployment thing... :

I'm gonna be a smart ass and say New England. :D

Seriously though, I'd love to take the kiddos to the great lakes when they get older and can handle a legit road trip.

It is, and its a nice place to retire if you dont mind lots of snow. I have lived all over the world, and could have gone anywhere when I got out of the USAF, and I decided the UP was a great place to be. All of this is within a short drive of where I live. Sand River is about two miles from my house. Really its worth it to drive down M28 to Marquette on teh way home, unless you dont like beautiful places.

Miners Castle, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Munising Mi.

              Miners Falls, Munising Mi.

              Au Train Island.

Storm on Superior near Sand River Mi.

Waves on Sand Point, Munising Mi.

              Deer Lake, Shelter Bay Mi.

              Shelter Bay Mi.

              Fall colors in Shelter Bay.

Compared to where I grew up in Nebraska.

Lots more to see in Michigan.

Mom always said that there's nothing prettier than Michigan when it decides to get pretty. We'd have retired there but after my heart attack I just COULD NOT do cold weather any more. Wilmington is beautiful, too (I'll have to take some pics).

I was just on Mac Island (Memorial Day) - a great getaway. It's been about 20 years since I was up there. Taking your own bikes is a good idea too, plenty of trails and roads to take. Definitely drive across the bride - you can even park in the UP and take the ferry from there...probably fewer people too. Not sure if it's open but there use to be a place called Castle Rock just on the northside of the bridge. A big rock that you can walk to the top of. If you're coming from Indy, go up 131 and eventually go through Traverse City and that area up there on the way to the bridge. Enjoy!
