  • Maryland Judge Decrees Pontiac G8 GT Tail Lights Illegal

Went to court for my clear tail lights on my car and was found guilty!

The judge actualy told me she didn't care what the manufacturer said, what the federal govt said, what the DOT # stamped onto my taillights said if the officer says my lights aren't legal then they're not legal. I took the G8 sales brochure in along with pics of my car and other G8 GT's and the VIN trace by 3 different dealers saying my lights were factory none of it mattered she found me guilty of failing to display or reflect red light on the rear of the car. Didn't matter the reflecters were in the bumper, didn't matter where the light is has that little red circle, the whole lens isn't red so they're not legal. Also where the back-up and turn signals are should be the reflectors according to the cop so the V6 cars lights aren't legal either.

Judge stupid went on to tell me that maybe I should consider trading in or selling the car since its not legal in MD and that I'm going to continue to get the $60 tickets till I get rid of the car.

So I contacted Pontiac's 1-800 # and I have an apt next friday to have my car looked at by them and see if they can help or at least repay me the $85.50 fine and court costs.

I honestly don't know what else I can do. The cop was ALL smiles afterwards and winked at me! WTF! Now I'm screwed! How do I go to work now? I drive right thru where he works!! So this ass nuget can make up **** randomly for any car he gets a hard on for and nothing can be done to fight it!

    This is BS.

Go to the automotive section of walmart, buy some trailer lights, drill holes, bolt them on.

DOT trumps state regulations. Fight the hell out of it if there's a DOT number on the tail light.

            Blind justice
            ???

I would think it would be in GM's best
interest to get involved.....even if they had
to pony up for legal representation.

Also as mentioned here.....DOT trumps the state.

yeah, so? did they appeal the ticket? if not, then this is nothing more then sour grapes - cop makes the allegation; if the person on the other side doesn't do their homework then they have no one to blame but themselves for having to pay a ticket.

Let me make this completely clear - the Constitution says nothing about protecting the innocent, it does, however, give you a right to trial by a jury of your peers. Innocence is an incomplete defense.

If they break his horns that bad he can put in V6 taillights which are all red . These states are really reaching to the bottom of the barrel for a few bucks though.

I'd burn that judge to the ground. It became a topic tonight in my Transportation Management class. Under full review, yeah, this guy has an awesome case.

I'd swear I saw that on a honda lookin buggy. Clear lense relying on LED as red.. I guess they went too far.
A state really can push some papers around... maine and EGR is a big F*ck up.. hence noone poking and prodding with gadgets for CO2 measurements of that particular moment in time.. outside the garage the car could be something else.

what other car maker does that with rear lights?

I think the epileptic snappy twacker leds used as blinkers ought to take a flying hike off the road too..parking lights, great. Blinkers, give it a fade in and out like a pleasant movie..LEDS cannot do this. >

A lot of the Japanese automakers have toyed with them, the imported Holdens (Pontiacs) had them, but so long as there's a DOT number, the point is moot...the Federal Gov't okayed the lenses as-is. No state can overrule that.

And as for that LED thing...screw that! I like the fact that the light isn't lazily fading..and that it'll last longer than a conventional bulb.

The original thread link did not work for me.  I searched the G8 forums and found a duplicate thread here...

If you read through that one, you will see that he had hacked apart his tails and painted parts of the inside, etc.  Not sure how it really affected the legality of them, but I certainly think it would hurt his case in trying to claim they are all like that by taking pics of other G8 tails and literature.  His certainly are not going to be like the ones in the pics he took to court and they definitely are no longer as they were from the factory. I certainly think it would negate any DOT approval.

                              I'd call g.m
and appeal that judge can't make the rules..
                              d.o.t does..
                              i'd also call the d.o.t.
and ask them how this can be...
let them get in the judges face....
