  • Class Reunions

Today Lisa in West Virgina sent out a thing, a really long poem. I'm not big into poems, although that's what songs are to begin with. This one was long, about class reunions, and it went on and on. I stayed for it all. It ended up where for your 60th class reunion, you only go to find out if you'll be the only one there.

But it stirred some non-existent memories for me. I wrote back:

That's good. I don't usually read poems that long. That one's good.

Reminds me, I've never been to a class reunion. And I never will. I was the kid who didn't really fit in, not athletic enough and not even quite wild enough to fit in with the potheads. And everything was based on cliques. The little puddle of superior or inferior kids off in one corner somewhere, based on stautus. No, I was the kid in the class that nobody will ever remember.

I got the letters in the mail every five years, sent from the bubbly cheerleader who makes it all happen for the reunions, the chick I wasn't even close to being able to talk to back then. Until I moved out of town and she no longer had my mailing address.

All I wanted from high school was "Out." I mean, if they didn't like me then, why would they like me now? And in a bigger sense, the real sense, ......a great big vice-versa.

    Re: Class Reunions

But it all depends on how you felt about the friends you had in high school. Class of '01's reunions are coming up, and I've got three schools mailing me the information. The HS I graduated from, I was there all of four months, but I'm very interested in who went where and did what (doesn't hurt that I'll probably be in a better standing, either. ;D) The HS in Colorado I'm not sure about...I had a couple of friends, but made a LOT of waves in the year and a half I was there, got suspended, expelled, etc. The one in WA is a 35-minute drive from my apartment, but I genuinely could care less who did what there
    Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!

"Remy-Z, you've outdone yourself again, I thought a Mirada was the icing on the cake of rodding, but this Imperial is the spread of little 99-cent candy letters spelling out "EAT ME" on top of that cake."

      I don't go.

Most of my friends from that era are dead now,
and the ones who aren't, well they aren't really friends anyway.

There ya are, Min. I've been sitting here thiking about it, and I do not have one single friend I ever made in school. The friends, the real ones, all came later.

Sorry for a sort of negative post, but I really didn't like school at all. I can't fix that.

            Re: Class Reunions

I went to my 10th and 20th, we didn't have a 25th. Probably won't go to my 30th if I can find out who died between my 20th and 30th. I am trying to be the last one standing.

I was like you, Peewee. Didn't really fit in anywhere. I had some friends, but have lost track of them for the most part. I might call or go see one every couple of years. I guess as you get older, high school looses its relevance in your life. I am on Facebook and can find most of the people I went to HS with, but then wonder why would I want to "friend" them?

a footnote , one of my brothers classmates stuck a gun in his mouth the other night , nobody knows why , but he made sure his wife found him a couple of days later ...

The friends I made in school are still around. Class reunions are not for me.

I went to ours in 1992 ...I was deeply into the party lifestyle back then ...so , hoisting john grioli over my head while running across the dance floor was in the realm of high school days for me

                    high school reunion.

I don't go, never have.. not even invited. class of 91..

I was quiet anyway... an abyss that disappeared. 8)

Small towns coming from a big one.. sucks for pretending life long friends anyway.
A GED not for being a dropout.. the school overlapped too many past courses. Then the way women work here.. if they were at my level, they were marrying some 30 year old...

I understand you peewee. Real friends come with adult life.

may a stable school in one place stay with the kids..

I went to my 20th in '02 and it will probably be my last. I only saw 1 or 2 people that I was really friends with and I still keep in touch with. I was a bit of a loner myself, only had a handfull of people that I hung out with anyway.

                          Re: Class Reunions

I went to the 10th and 20th and I'll go next year if there is a 25th. I hope so. Even with all my health issues in school, I still have a ton of fond memories of high school. I was never in a particular clique. I seemed to migrate. I hung out with all kinds of people. One of the guys I rode home with was the soccer player, but the other three guys in the cars were gearhead/pothead types. They all grew up on the same street and were childhood friends. Same here. I had friends from when I played soccer, basketball, and such. I had friends from hanging at the pool all summer. I had friends that were my neighbors. I had friends that were just in the same classes. Some guys/gals I've known since the second grade when we got back from Okinawa. Many are now facebook friends.

In the end, I think our class was really pretty close overall.

I feel for those whose hs time sucked.

                            Me too.

I was a crappy athlete but played soccer through HS. I wasn't all that good a trombone player but played all through HS. I wasn't all that smart but pulled gentleman C's through the classes I sucked at.

I got a wild hair across my ass at the end of Sophmore year and ran for class VP. I was the guy that knew everyone and "crossed party lines" so to speak because I was an "athlete" and also was in the band.

I beat the hottest girl in school...and this girl (now woman) still lives in town and is a mom, but is still a bombshell.

At the end of Jr. year I ran for class President and won. That means I am kind of in charge of the whole reunion deal and that was the "platform" I ran on Senior year. It was a life election as opposed to year to year.

Anyway Scott, I am with you. I also feel bad for anyone who had a crap time at HS and I TOTALLY understand anyone who is "over it" and has moved on with their life.

To each their own, but I love the reunion stuff.

                              Re: Class Reunions

I didn't fit in when in HS.... mostly because I tried too hard.... I wasn't athletic, though never picked last.... I was never dating the cheerleaders, but never went to a function alone... was too popular to be a nerd, but too much of a nerd to be with the popular folks.....

so I just didn't go to my reunions. I went for my 20th.... it was kind of a humorous/healing scenario. The cheerleader was hitting on me.... the jocks.... well, I'm in better shape by him by a bunch.... the rest, were really trying hard to impress me with what they had done (not much).... I'll go back for my 50th to see who's left. it's not I dislike them; it's just they aren't relevent to me. (shrug)

I do laugh at the facebook requests, especially from the ones that made my life miserable in HS...
