I love the appearance of the worn steel.. the skinny inline six hood is a tragedy.
tortured driver just to look at..lightning attractor with a gas tank and tetanus, hydro carbons on open iron circulating the cab.. and in a desert.. where the heat just cannot have these extra problems.
thoughts of mechanical injection, slow going... there is a bit of nature. It keeps the driver alive...
crazy martyr was a good act. fnatastic to watch even for me... familiar with 2 million mile cabovers. popped rivets and shadows in the drivers seat.
I'd like to see the wider petes, or kw900, all steel, the same worn out beast.. hendrickson heavy leafs.. all steel wheels... with one chrome emblem on the front

If you read Hot Rod and remember the story, from about 4-minutes into that video where the truck is "chasing" the Magnum, it was shot in the same canyon where we beat on a bunch of cars back in 2008.

After going out to see the 787 in Victorville a few weeks ago I went to pick up an engine in Acton (across the desert to the west) for a friend and wound up with a couple hours to kill. Soledad Canyon Rd. where according to the Hemmings piece as well as my previous knowledge Duel was filmed, runs through Acton. We used to camp along that road when I was a kid so I cruised through just for the memories. Now, when watching Duel last time (a week ago, umm hmm) I looked pretty close but could not connect many of the actual locations...at times I wondered if it wasn't Cajon Pass north of San Bernardino we were looking at, but even the old road through there is four lanes not two as in the movie.
Looking in Wikipedia however, I see that filming was also done along other local highways including Angeles Forest so that makes sense. There isn't a single particular "route" that they travelled along, instead it was just some scenes shot here, some there. My old canyon-racing days included lots of time along certain of those roads so I should know better.
Another thing I noticed in the film was when the truck went off the hill the driver door appeared to be freshly thrown open. In the story the driver stayed in the truck of course so you'd think that even with all the other little detail screwups they would have had the stunt driver (Carey Loftin, kind-of a legend in that business) exit sooner and get the door shut. According to Wiki he was supposed to as it turns out. A device meant to keep the truck's steering straight malfunctioned and instead of stopping the scene he stayed with it on the steering wheel and jumped out at the last minute.
The original TV movie was filmed with only the one truck, and in thirteen days.

I loved the comments after the Hemmings article. My favorite:

The think i remember best,is the screamin from Dennis the salesman..."faster"..."faster"... ;D.He was actually quite like a bimbo in a horror movie..you know you shouldnt look down in the dark cellar...but they will nonetheless..Comment

That was one cool movie...... Loved the suspense..... 1971 thriller directed by Steven Spielberg.....
