Re: Whatever floats your Antique Race Boat.....

I have a lot of very early 16 MM film of those Early wooded boats, and still have my Dads 16 hp Sea Service motor from his B Hydro 58 MPH, it was a Fillenger Boat (Genes Dad), B hydro, A lift The "Y-54". He was a Four State Champ in his Day The lower unt was hand filed to get that thin profile to it. Those guys used to have to really work for everything before you could just whip out a Credit Card

      Jeff -
I'd LOVE to see some pictures of that. What a great family story.

Those boats were indeed labors of love - most if not all were hand built, every piece.

There are still guys out there hand building boats- check ou bateau.com some time.... amazing things can be done with epoxy, 'glass cloth and wood!

Re: Whatever floats your Antique Race Boat.....

I was once at Lake Tahoe for work and stumbled across the Concours d'Elegance of wood boats they have there every year. Being in Tahoe in summer is the coolest anyways, but if you have a woody for wooden boats, you gotta go see this. There are a couple boats that were found at the bottom of the lake, raised, and restored and now enjoyed again.

This is the one I nearly fell into the lake trying to get a better look at. So, so sexy.

He pulls into the marina and says "just give me all you got" instead of fill-er-up.
That looks like something Howard Hughes would captain, amazing.

Before my Dads cousin died, he was a volunteer at the museum in Clayton cuz he live up there in the summer. He had a boat in the museum, I think it was a Lyman, it had a Gray Marine V8, pretty much a Rambler motor I think. I haven't been up there since I hauled the engine up to him after a rebuild back in 1993. Clayton is only 4hrs. north of me, I'm feeling a roadtrip.

Thanks for bringing back alot of good memories Joe.

The Splendid Splinter was as hooked on fishing as anyone who has ever lived. This motor is pretty cool. I have seen the fishing tackle he endorsed before but never knew about the motor...cool!

Anybody know anything about "rallye" boats? This boat is in the barn next to my house. its called Miss Ohio and it ran Mercury outboard motors in a type of rallying event. The barn has a workshop where they repaired the motors and there was a bunch of paperwork used at the checkpoints of these rally's... I know nothing about this other than I think it took place in the fifties and sixties, and it looks like allot of fun. Thanks for posting all the wood boat pics... I love 'em.
