  • Got my dad an early bday present.

The Liberty Belle B-17 will be in town this weekend.

My sister and I went in together to buy my dad a ride on the plane. It will be awesome. He will gab on and on about it for 5 years at least.

I can't wait. 4 big ass engines winding up.... 45 minute flight ....he's gonna love it!

Oh yeah, I did get clearance from the tower (my Mom) before I scheduled it!

Life is short. Be a do'er and not a shoulda done'er.

Here show him this shot of a bunch of nose art from the 388th Bomber Squadron. My grandfather's squadron. That pic was taken the day it was christened. I have no idea who that guy is, could be a senator. That baby saw real action in WWII.

The top left shot is of Happy Bottom. That's Edward G Robinson doing the honors.

Got to see Liberty Belle in either Alabama or Tyler, TX last year. Awesome plane, since we were uniformed we got to go in and have a look-around. I didn't know you could buy a flight on it, that's pretty cool!
        Editor-at-Large at...well, here, of course!

Those old pics are cooool! I am dyyyyyying to tell him, but I think I will wait until lunch on Friday. We go eat together every Friday for lunch. We alternate who buys each week because he wouldn't let me buy him lunch every week. lol

He loves to go look at the old planes whenever they fly in to town. He'd never indulge to buy himself a ride, so we did it for him. He's a Navy vet from the early 60's. He was a radioman on the U.S.S. Rush, and got (got?) to participate in the blockade of Cuba at a time when they thought the world was gonna end any minute. Went on to become a Soil Scientist (and a very very good one!) with the USDA Soil Conservation Service (Now NRCS). He is now 71 and is full time Grandpa.

Off topic fact: The guy can still out-dig me with a sharp shooter any dang day of the week. Fence post holes for example: The holes I dig are goofy shaped and sloppy. His are neat, straight down, and not much wider than the shovel head. Sorta kind of annoys me a little. lol ;D ;D ;D

          This is gonna be fun!!!!!

Here's the link to the thread full of pics my Granddad took going back to his training.

My Dad was flying B-47's during the Cuban Missile crisis carrying H bombs. He was stationed in Morocco and on Oct 24th, 1962 the sirens went off, they took off heading towards Russia. They didn't get the abort code until they were all the way across the Mediterranean over Turkey and making their turn towards southern Russia. Good ole Curtis LeMay was dying to try put his toys.

He is going to love that, may be the coolest gift ever

I've never even gotten to see a B17, which is my favorite bomber
I'd never even heard of anything like this before, it may be expensive, but I am definately doing that some day, It'll cost near $1K, because my dad loves them too, so we'd both be going, but I will do that

Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.
