PARSIPPANY ? Terry Cook's 28th annual Lead East '50s Party starts tonight at the Hilton Parsippany Hotel.
Drive-in movies, more than 30 bands and 1,200 pre-registered cars from 1972 and earlier are featured throughout the weekend.
It's a slice of innocent American life that's worth remembering, said Cook, a 68-year-old Chester resident. If the weather is nice, about 15,000 people from around the United States are expected to attend the event, which runs through Sunday.

"It was just a magic period of time," he said of the 1950s, adding that the cars, music and hair were flamboyant and distinctive.
"We're so fortunate that we live in a country where we can do this wacky, nostalgic, fun kind of thing," Cook said.
The event includes Golden Oldies concerts in the air-conditioned Hilton ballroom, all-night dancing and doo-wop a cappella groups.
He said attendees should be sure to check out the "perfect" paint job on Peter Daniele's 1955 Chevrolet, dubbed the Candied Classic after its deep candy apple color.
Daniele's car ? one of two cars featured in the event's 2010 logo art ? will be near the drive-in movie screen, Cook said.
Daniele, a 56-year-old Madison resident, bought the car for $35 in 1971 when he was 15 years old. After racing it for a few years, he modified the car to bring it to shows. At his first show, the car won the best in show, best paint, best interior and people's choice awards. It later was featured in Hot Rod, Car Craft, Classic Chevy and Popular Hot Rodding magazines, among others.
The Candied Classic has a distinctive New Jersey license plate: FIFTY5.
In 1992, BF Goodrich Tires brought Daniele and his car to a Las Vegas for an eight-day car show, where a man from England offered him $70,000 for the car, which he turned down, said Daniele, who owns Rose City Collision and is vice president of the Madison Chamber of Commerce.
Daniele has another '55 Chevy, which is green and white and close to its original state.
"People wave at the green original," Daniele said. "When they see the Candied Classic, they gawk."
He said the appeal is its deep color.
"With the color and the chrome, everything just pops at you," he said.

Re: have they called off lead east?
I was talking to a guy at the Foxboro cruise who I first met at Lead East a couple years back. He's got a bitchin' '65 Chevy stepside on air suspension. Looks like a stocker but it lays right on the ground when he parks it.
