  • Coolant

Maybe this should be in the tech. section, but I'm posting it in the G.D.
What are you people using for coolant?I know straight tap water is bad,but I've read
on other forums that straight distilled water and straight deionized water is also bad.
Dist.water or D.I. water mixed with antifreeze,or waterwetter or Evans collant?Am using
an alum. intake so will be using a zink attatched to the rad. cap.Not worried about freezing,
just wat to prevent eroding of the alum.waterpump and intake.Thanks.

    Re: Coolant

I find the conept of distilled has a backwards.. but my locale is backwards to alot of other places as well, on severl other car subjects...

why gather the steam that left the stronger water? I filter what is left in the pan that boiled for a while...(if you understand that, you know what I am saying)

I buy 50/50 anything modern, even a parts store brand. Of course, I have been welding and real painting killing 23 year old hydrocarbon chains like hidden monsters...(it loves the engine coolant as a finale) but to go good brand, I would also buy 50/50, prestone.

I did spot the "DEX" stuff aimed for gm engines (?), dad uses it in the diesel. (it is orange.)

it is all good, the expanding weirdo fluid nightmares of yesteryear , I have not seen in a long time.

      Re: Coolant

I would avoid DEX (alias Dex-cool) like the plague, I have seen that orange crap eat it's way through more intake gaskets and wreck good motors than I care to count, hell ask any GM tech.
A good quality antifreeze and good quality water mixed properly will go a long ways, tap water will work as long as its good drinking water. Here in Canada our tap water at home is pretty good so I just use that, no problems after 20 years and I have used tap water in a lot of cars and trucks.

Seriously, what colour is the sky in your world? The steam that has left the stronger water??????

Here's a hint - the steam is the water that evaporates off - it is a surface area issue, not a "stronger water" issue. The water that is at the surface will boil off first due to lower pressure (therefor, slightly lower boiling point). Provided it is heated in an even space, ie. oven. If it's on a stove (as most normal people would do it), the steam bubbles will form at the bottom of the pot as this is the hottest area..... blah blah blah

If you boil a pan until it's dry, you will find all of the crap that was in the water. Collecting the steam is in essence collecting the pure water (ie. distilling it)

Whatever CarQuest or Napa brand is around here. I mix as close to 50/50 as I can and add something like Red Line Water Wetter.

              Re: Coolant

I miss the days when there was ONE kind of coolant - GREEN, and it only came full strength.

There was ONE oil filter for a Ford and you had your choice between 10w30 or 10w40 - both of which had enough zinc and phosphorous!
There's always something new to learn.
