  • Locking Lug nut.... No key?

Hmmm oh and NO front Brakes.... metal to Metal..... ( my son's truck obviously ... I wouldn't have put the nuts on )

How do you deal with it???? Gotta take off the wheel.....

So the answer was freaking Elegant......

You Weld a Nut or in my case a 5/8" bolt to the head of the Nut and simply Unscrew it... no kidding... worked like Stink...

I have removal tools, but I usually use an
air hammer, with a chisel bit, and walk it
          around till it's loose.

Depends on the wheels...if the nuts are not recessed in too far, and they use a taper seat like that, just whack the nut sideways one way then the other way with a BFH, then unscrew it by hand.

uhhh....yeah, that's a junkyard trick, might not be too good for the studs

I use vise grips. Nice welds Keith ;)

You had more success than I did trying to weld through a nut onto a stud broke off below the surface of an aluminum head....

they make tapered sockets with "teeth" on the inside you smack on with a hammer then twist... your method was cheaper, and didn't require a trip to the store. 8)

Re: Locking Lug nut.... No key?

My buddy found a set of Iroc wheels with practically new tires on a 87 Camaro in the salvage yard. He was using my hammer and vice grips to hammer off each of the locks. (Every lug was a lock). I started rifling through the car's glove box and console and, wouldn't you know it, I found the lock keys. After we got the wheels off, we discovered practically brand new calipers with new pads. We took those too.

In the past I have had to use a cheap socket, beaten on the locking lug nut with BFH then use the impact to spin it right off.

Pound a socket over it and zip it off. Then take the socket, put it in a vise and take a drift and knock the lug nut out.

                          Repeat as needed. ;)

That's how I'd done it in the past. I found a socket made for that purpose, with teeth around the inside, in a box of old tools I bought at a garage sale.
