  • Need a set of California Black Plates

Ok I am not sure this is legal but my 69 chevelle is from California and I drive this car every where in the summer. I am looking for a set of Black
California plates for the car when I go to cruise nights with it. I have the legal set of plates with the car,I just like the look of those plates on the car.
So can anyone help me get a set of Black California plates for it?. I will pay for a set

You can find them at the Pomona or Long Beach swap meet all the time. Several vendors have them. However, it's not legal to assign YOM (year of manufacture) plates on cars that are not '62 and older in California. There's also a guy who is often at Long Beach who will "restore" your current plates in black and yellow, though that's not technically legal either. Plus it does not look right unless you have plate with the CALIFORNIA embossed in them (it's silkscreened on modern plates).

Re: Need a set of California Black Plates

Certain police depts having been lobbying the state to make all of us that still have our original plates turn them in and replace them with new ones. This is because they have so much trouble seeing our plates at night. They must run into dozens of old cars with these plates every shift by the way they are whining about it.

If you'd quit running from the cops every night they wouldn't complain ;D

Don't rally like Arnoid, I me Arnold. The Goveranator has screwed car guys before. Cars didn't have to be smog 30 years back, and Gov Avoid that rhyme's with hemorrhoid, and steroid make him an ass-teroids pass a law that 1975 was the cut off date on smog, plus special construction vehicles got screwed, only a certain number a year are allow, causing a waiting list.

The new CA law is actually good. It allows us to retrofit black and yellow plates onto '70-older cars. Year of Manufiacture retrofit plates were previously only allowed for 62-back.

Over the winter I purchased YOM plates for my 1970 Nova.
State of Missouri charges $28 for life of plates.........no inspections.
                              Pretty good deal.
