I'm gonna use oil based Kilz, & a decent(Wallymort) paint.

2x4 uprights are just fine, for most things.
I thought about using 4x4's, but I wanted to keep cost down & save space.

I got a Kreg pocket hole jig as a gift last year, and it makes outrageously strong square frame stuff like this.

I highly recommend it if you need to knock together 2x4 framed stuff on a regular basis.

a cheap way to keep those without paint is aluminum house faciure.

nearyl snip it with scissors and laminates to the wood, hardly a fake strong.

paint and car parts.. useless. find some metal

who has the strength to put an engine block on a shelf? Gravity holds mine down on the floor, every time....

Stripped sbc's don't weigh that much(with 2 people). The blocks I'm storing are bare 2.5L AMC/Jeep motors, aka very light. 8)

              Re: Cheap Garage Storage Shelves

Try lifting an FE block yourself one time - I can only get one high enough for the lowest shelf... not far off the floor!

Jim - you live where stuff doesn't rust - if I left a block on the floor of my shop - especially if it was there during a seasonal change - it would be rusty.

I've even considered building a "hot locker" type set up just to keep machined stuff from rusting...

Anyway - we all agree that building shelves is way better than buying them... unless you can get pallet racking darn near free.
There's always something new to learn.

ack! it's so hard to find decent screws anymore - I started ordering all mine online from McFeely's. That place is awesome.
                    McFeely's rocks.

You're better off with a big nail than drywall screws, the shear strength of a drywall screw is probably negative.

                      The Kreg is way cool.

Let me throw out that David Perris (the Sharpie Nova) is in the used storage rack business. He's a great guy and is a regular on here when work allows - <Rack4u>. Just another alternative.
