  • cam help or suggestions

I have a 72 402[truck]that has 66 closed chamber heads that I am looking for a cam for.I want power to 5k and a mean sounding idle. This will be in a 65 swb with a t350 and 3.73 gears. It will have a performer rpm intake and I have not decided n the carb yet.I am conservative with cam choice and found some of the 268 grinds that look good.I do not want too much lift due to the valve shrouding on the early heads. So .. mean idle and good power to 5k.Suggestions please.

I will probably build a 468 some time in the future for it with a more sensible cam choice. But yeah ,sound over max power right now.

Comp Cams has free software on their website. You can punch in your info and it will recommend different cams.

You might want to consider going with the performer intake with that rpm limit, and a thumper type cam grind. Find out exactly what grind spec's you want and call Engle and he will grind it for a reasonalble price.

Engle is out of the game. All the Engles are now. Sold off to another company. Call Isky instead.

                  Just a comment,
Just a cam might not give you the sound you crave, I'm thinking you're going to need some compression too.
I've stabbed a few "too big for what I have" cams in and it didn't sound that great, it sounded kinda like I have too big of a cam for what I have...

That's what cool about the Thumper Series from Comp. They use fast opening ramps and build cylinder pressure to make up for lack of compression. It's why I didn't get one for my 10.25:1 compression 454.

In '72, the BBC were still around 9:1 compression which is good for today's crap gasoline.

Well by all means then....never tried one of those, shows how far out of the loop I am.
