Just got word that the owner of Amarillo Dragway, Jon Wolfe, was killed in a car accident while returning home from the IHRA bracket finals. His wife is in ICU and is not expected to live. They were not wearing their seat belts for whatever reason.....

RIP Jon, you were a class act and will truly be missed.

Re: Dammit dammit dammit dammit dammit DAMMIT!!!!!

Heard this AM that his wife is doing better.

Jon, a long time racer at Amarillo Dragway, bought the track earlier this year and was steadily improving the facility. He had made great progress, but sadly now the fate of the track is up in the air. I hope somebody steps up and takes it on, for the sake of the community and to continue on with Jon's dream of making Amarillo Dragway a great place to race.

I guess if anything is to be learned from this, maybe it should be:

      a. wear your damn seat belts
      b. never over-tow - I personally think Jon's mid 80's Chevy 1/2 ton truck was inadequate for the enclosed racecar trailer he was pulling.

sad no doubt, but u never know, maybe the wife will keep it going in loving memory

as far as the towing. the 1/2 ton shouldn't be a factor. as the trailor has brakes, the correct hitch with swaybars is more of an issue. as a 3/4 or 1 ton isn't all that heavier in the bed area..

no matter, it's sad. we'll never know what happened, it was just his time.

That sucks. I tow a single open trailer/Camaro with a 2WD Dakota V8 and it works fine - but I have the trailer package, run a full hitch with equalizer bars and sway control, and I keep after the trailer brakes (they REALLY count!). And I wouldn't tow any more load with this truck.

More importantly, I hope his family finds some peace in this difficult time and that his wife pulls thru OK.
