  • 1984 s15 ... oem diesel?!

I found this on local craigslist.

did not know it existed. A 1984 I did encounter, extremely rare here was a nissan diesel extended cab, 2wd.. and get this: oem weels were 13 inch on over 200 ft pounds. My dufus room mate ended up with it, of course the j-tin died 500k miles before the engine never will. :

To see this gm pickup was an eye opener. a td04 turbo candidate... awesome project piotential. it is not about being green.

I only dug up that it is isuzu engined, and 2.2 liter, 4 speed (? 5 speed?).. and the s15 had some heavier stuff to accomodate. all mechanical.

I think they sold a diesel Chevette too. There was an isuzu diesel car that was basically a Chevette (same body family) in the early 80s sold here.

      that does trigger a memory..
the chevette got a tiny one. The cold weather absolutely impossible. they were just not big enough in the fuel air cylinder size.of course those problems went with the diesel rabbits of the same time frame.

but a 2.2.. wow. that is quite a candidate.
the s15 plays with v8s with a good hack.

          $4500 seems awfully steep.

Never heard of that, I wonder how good it is. I recall hearing about a diesel Ranger also but haven't seen one.

Canadian version... same as the earlier diesel isuzu or luv pickups.... they got awesome mileage, mid-50s ... we had one for a shop truck, the truck rusted away (on the west coast that's actually not so common), we changed the oil and trannies at the same time (it would eat 5th gear), but the motor was still running strong at 500k miles....

my backup plan on my bet with my wife is to put that motor in a 2 seat sportscar to win the bet ;)

Rangers had 2. The later model was turbo'd.

                    Re: 1984 s15 ... oem diesel?!

When fuel prices were really nuts - people were pulling out old diesels from barns, fields, junkyards, and getting STOOPID money for them, since they'd "run on anything"

I watched on diesel rabbit pick up in TN on ebay - poop brown with tan interior and all the attractiveness of a 40hp no overdrive non turbo diesel slug - and it sold for somewhere north of $4000.

I got $4500 for my '88 IDI diesel supercab 4x4 - and it was getting RUSTY.

There were diesel rangers, S10/S15, chevette, nissan, rabbit, escorts, tempos, and a few others, very few sold. They got great MPG but were really really REALLY slow!

                          I'd like an olds 260 diesel in a s-10 2wd
with arp head studs and main stud with girdle
                          5spd and 2.27 rear gears
                          that be a great d/d

I've been thinking about things like that for a long time. I looked at a couple turbo diesel rangers, but they were just too far gone and the sellers wanted too much money for them.

There's something to be said for the simplicity of a full frame RWD set up for a daily driver - something easy to fix, and not horrible to get parts for when they're needed.
That last part would be the downside of one of these, choosing an engine that was used alot in another application would be the ticket.
