  • 3rd Gen F-body G-machine

    Howdy,

Why does the Pro-Touring/Roadrace/Autocross scene seem to skip the 3rd Gen F-body? Lots of 1st and 2nd Gen stuff, and the 4th Gen is also decently represented but not the 3rd? It seems like for 80's vintage cars, the major players are Fox body Stangs, G-bodies, C4 Vette's, and even the occasional S-10 truck.

    Thoughts on why?

3 and 4 have identical rear suspensions . I wish someone would come up with atleast a double A-arm front sub frame. I'm just waiting out DSE sooner or latter they will notice the big market. What better car to auto x than a cheap well handing car to start with.

I agree that the SLA front end on the 4th gens are better but I totally dig the styling on the 3rds more. I was reading the RSE article in CC over again and kept thinking that the 1st 2 yrs of the 3rd Gen actually fall into the Muscle Car class not the Late Model. Considering the work done on the class winning 2nd Gen Camaro I don't feel at all bad about trying to exploit that loophole.

They're crappy cars (lightweight and chinzy compared to the 70s models), and the styling hasn't yet become "old" enough to look good again to many folks. Smog laws apply to them, so you can't do squat to them for performance legally.

                    No argument there.

Some would say that's an advantage.

a monza is a big vega. Or a really big chevette. Don't see much good coming out of either

Big problem in Cali. If you see a Z28 or IROC being practically given away, it's because it won't pass emissions. I don't like 3rd gens because ever one I ridden/driven was a damned rattle trap, including the front strut suspension.
