  • New Ice Fishing Shack

I went over to friend's shop today and three of us turned an old snowmobile trailer into an ice fishing shack. The plan is to be able to tow it to a lake with a pickup and then tow it out onto the lake with a utility four wheeler.

We ripped off the rotten decking and put it on jack stands.

We built new floors, walls and a roof and it's all bolted right to the trailer. We even built a pointed "prow" on it.

That iron box in the middle of the front is the wood stove. We've got dual slash-cut chrome exhaust tips that we'll be running out through the roof for a chimney. We'd like to burn some trash or something in there on the way to the lake so it looks like we're rollin' coal like a diesel truck, ha ha.

We didn't have enough ear plugs so one guy wore a chainsaw helmet. That's how we do it in Maine.

Me working on getting the roof panels in place.

    Fuel

    Roof coming along.

We've still got to mount the door, get the wood stove in, build some benches and get some trap doors put in for fishing, but we made great progress today. That's my buddy Dave on the left and a transmission specialist we call Tranny Man in the doorway.

I've heard tile backer board works well as a fire stop -probably a good idea to put that along the wall where the chimney will be and on the floor under the stove.

What kind of flashing are you using around the front corners of the roof? Hate to see any of that roofing come off as you're rolling down the highway at 85mph or more.... seems that's the only speed those snowmobile trailers go around here, I"ve been passed by guys going up north with a trailer full of sleds like I was standing still, with my cruise set at 75. :o
There's always something new to learn.

Seems like an awful lot of time and money to sit in the middle of a frozen lake and drink beer. It's a real dandy though.

We haven't made up our minds on backing behind/above the woodstove. One guy said that he's got some leftover thin sheets of steel from another project. We probably will insulate the walls, too.

I think total investment is about $750, including the trailer. I have about $10 in beer invested and one nasty cut on my hand.

                  Re: New Ice Fishing Shack

Is the shack removable from the trailer or are you going to fish from inside the shack on the trailer ?

If it stays on the trailer, you better think of someway to make wind shields from the cutout in the bottom of the floor to the hole in the ice !!

Right you are Dan .... maybe a skirt around the whole thing is a better approach.

                            LOL

Here I was hoping for a Michael Chiklis look-a-like win.

We've got some old Fisher snow plow hydraulic cylinders that we'll run with a generator to keep things level because--yup--the shack stays bolted to the trailer.

                            This is serious redneck engineering.

Hoosier: We had a Red Lobster in Bangor for about a year. Then it went out of business for some "strange" reason. No LJS, either.
