    Yessir, T-56 in a 383 LT1 here. 25 mpg on the highway.

      Re: Number of gears question

      you answered your own question...

trucks still like the more gears, more for the sake of a switch rather than shift.. this makes many over unders. Which is silly.. but it is easier.. alot of gears are not necessary in the rigs. Deep reduction for the forest would have six axles anyway.

the cars are narrower than ever.. the 6 speed proves it.

a machinist could chime in about the timing changes of carburator cams to injection.. it tells it all. Injection makes more noise but does not have the real curve engines used to.

diesels are slow enough not to be bothered, they get to stay full speed ahead. A great example of standing older groundis the cuymmins ISX going back to ine cam on the long straight six... proving even dual cams was an idiot.

all temporary I presume, even the four valves is an ahole.

Our 793 Haul trucks have 6 speed automatics ;D
        Escaped on a technicality.

It puts hair on their chest.

Or, allows them to run 5.38 gears and go on drag week.

Exactly, and some of these 6 speeds come with a 3.xx first gears, which makes like a 8.5:1 first gear ratio, can you say stump puller. ;)

I don't know about trends but when looking at a dual purpose car, that can do Drag Week on week and Bonneville the the next, a six speed can make things real easy. Combine that with a tall tire and a high revving small block and with a simple rear gear change you can have a lot of fun doing both. ;)
