When will everyone wake up and realize Steam is the power of the future? Oh, wait, that was already said a 100 + yrs. ago.

None the less a good read, and cool to see Coletti (a Ford GOD, and all around cool car guy IMO) is staying busy in retirement.

        Thanks Joe!

Coletti's a brilliant guy. Too bad he didn't get boost in the SVT Cobra sooner and made some wrong calls on the SVT Focus. And it's terrible that Ford has sat on his patent for juicing-up air-water charge cooling with an AC loop (SuperCooler concept: http://www.fordforums.com/f474/svts-...plained-33176/).

He does lend some "cred" to this start-up. I hope it works out. That will leave more fuel for us V8 "burners"**

(**"Burners" is from the cheesy 1981 movie "Firebird 2015 A.D." -- which was the name given to hold-outs to a government automobile ban. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082381/

BTW, kids, A.D. , which is short for "Anno Domini" should always be BEFORE the year, not after it. That was among the least of the problems in "Firebird 2015 A.D." But it was a good tip that the script writers didn't really have a clue)

I'm pulling for Eco-motors, I really am but holy crap. It's like an elephants graveyard of detroit executives. How can any start up support that top heavy payroll?

All the sucessful startups I've seen start with a super genius tinkerer and a great idea or someone with a ton of industry experience... or one of each and a lot of passion, long hours, and low paychecks. This looks like they're starting with a 50 year old engine design and 80 year detroit brass.

The guys I want to see succeed are Edison 2. That's a recipe for sucess. Take race car technology, mass produce it, and put it in street cars. It's a good model.

I can provide some insight to how these companies work.

Two options, really: either (a) the investor's money goes to big salaries with the hopes that further cash infusion "later" gets used for development (hoping all the Big Names on the payroll attracts further, bigger investment), or (b) the Executives take little or no pay with an equity stake in the company that "might" end up with a useful product.

These guys are way behind on showing a running product, my guess is they're working hard on development trying to get an example to run for more than a few seconds.

It sounds like eco-motors has the big money, didn't Bill Gates cut them a huge check?

I'd guess a lot of these old fogies are on the boards of some kind of private equity groups as well but I wonder what Bill's money is actually paying for since like you mentioned, there aren't any running engines yet.

In their business, that is maybe 6-12 months of operating capital. Not really that much. My "friends" (lol) burnt through 3x that in less than 2 years. It is not cheap to develop a new engine.

100% agree, I wasn't trying to imply that the 20 million would float them.

It is a pile of money though!

Opposed piston diesels have been around a long time. The Junkers Jumo is the first I can think of but the big one in the US is the Fairbanks-Morse that's been used in everything from Coast Guard cutters to submarines to stationary power plants. The fact they want to make one horizontally opposed is a new one but I don't really count it as revolutionary.
