  • IT'S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!!!! PINEWOOD DERBY RESULTS!

Pack 24 finished impound tonight. About 50 cars in all, that includes Scouts, parents and siblings.

Jake's blue hot rod with black stripes is on the back row next to Judd's red Mustang with a blue stripe. They are deburred, sanded, graphited, 3 wheeled and tipped the scales at 5.00 ounces. I hope they go a few rounds. Lots of interesting cars. Race should be fun tomorrow night..

My blue racer (No. 9) from 1978 is the only car entered in the Vintage division.

Good luck! If your kiddo makes the finals, put 100% nitro in it and let that mother eat! :D

I used to love building pinewood derby cars. My pack's rules would not allow us to add weight to the cars so normally someone with a painted block of wood won the race. Mine did ok in the "car show"

the trick is to , oh never mind, mine never won, cub scouts leaders kid winning would've never gone over well anyways..
but one year we built one that flew, and was 3 tenths faster than everyone.. dad didn't think me(more him than me, he painted it with automotive paint and the bondo shaping, candy apple green with bass boat sided metal flake)
that the 3rd run my car was run backwards, and it still almost won..
the trick is waxing the axles and then soaking them in rain X.
the wheels you heat then dip in armorall and leave then in it.. this is after all the sanding, etc on the wheels
              ;D

there is no rule like that,, just can't weight in over the 5 oz
we always hollowed out the body in "key" areas and added weight (fishing lead) to key areas
unless they've changed that rule.. this was 80-83

Re: IT'S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!!!! PINEWOOD DERBY TOMORROW!

The one we went to locally last year, was won by a black block of wood with two dinner forks taped to the top of it lol.

I think its all in the wheels and the nails that hold them on ;D

This was the hot thing when I was in middle school, CO2 racing, wish I kept the cars I build back then.

The key word was My pack's rules I never said it was the offical BSA rule, I was there that was the rule. Rules may change from location to location and time to time.

I won, one of Dads proudest moments. Not sure what did it to be honest - the car was a low door stop in the front with a gradual curve off the back, sort of a ferrari daytona profile - Dad had my brother and I pick a picture from one of our books to model the car after.

Just luck. We did sand the axles and wheels flat, and I think we put dry graphite on the axles.
We didn't have any fancy fixtures to check the alignment of the wheels, etc.

I think that may be my best paint job to date. ;D

I still have the car in a box some where, not sure where we put the weight, Mom was quite a seamstress, so instead of fishing sinkers, we used drapery weights. Drilled three holes and hammered the weights into them, I think it was near the rear axle slot.

                            HAVE FUN!

There's quite a lot of work and imagination in all those cars - I hope Lee is interested in Scouts when the time comes.
There's always something new to learn.

                              Great Success!

Judd finished 2nd overall and Jake finished 5th. I don't know how other packs run it, but the way these guys do it is based on time averages. The track has 4 lanes, and every car makes a pass in each lane. Lowest overall time average is the winner. Jake's car ran the first two in the low low 4.30's (fast for this track), but slowed in the third and fourth. Found out one of the nails for his back wheels was pulling out and causing the wheel to wobble. Judd's ran in the mid 4.30's and did not really have any issues. He was very very excited to finish second. I could have easily had a 1-2 finish had Jake's car not had an issue. Boo! Haha!

I kind of wish they did it as brackets instead of time, because Jake's car finished 1,1,1,3 in all his races. Judd was 2,2,3,1. That would place the emphasis on winning your heat and not just laying down a fast time.

I ran my vintage car in the adult class and finished second (low 4.50's). I didn't have anything for the lady that won. Her car was a mid 4.40 car, but mine was not too shabby for a car made in 1978 and quite literally had nothing done to the wheels & axles. lol

Overall a great night and now that the first one is under my belt, next year should be even more fun. heh heh
