  • Recommend a jack ?

Can anyone recommend a good jack? Something that I can put in the trunk for a roadtrip, small and sturdy enough to change a tire or do some quick repair under there. It has to be small though and Id like it to be mechanical rather than hydraulic also safe (good footing) better than say a typical scissor jack. I remember those safety jacks -? years ago but I havent seen one in many years maybe they werent so safe?

I don't know of any....I have a cheapo small floor jack in my 55, it's heavy and doesn't go up real high and it's not very stable.

I'll see what someone else comes up with. I'd like to get something better.

Brother in law has a small craftsman hydraulic floor jack. Came in a nice plastic case.

        small
        light
        non hydraulic
        stable

No I can't come up with one that meets that criteria.

I have a smaller one in a plastic case for traveling, it's not light, but it's not too bad.

If light is the ultimate criteria - you could try one of the HF aluminum "racing" jacks.

Dont forget the jackstands if doing roadside repairs and a few pieces of old plywood squares for better footing

Better yet, sit at home in the driveway and make motor noises and have the kids run by the window with different scenery.

                              Re: Recommend a jack ?

I modified a scissor jack out of a late modle that I welding a cradle to. I had it in the car for a couple long trips and thats it. I don't even carry a spare or any tools most of the time. For longer trips say 100+ miles I grab a small tool kit but still don't dcarry the jack or spare. I figure with having big and littles I'd probably have the wrong spare and wouldn't get far anyway.

No jack is safe enough to work under the car on, so carry a short jackstand or two with you if you really want a mobile shop
