How many of you are ASE certified or state certified?

As of today i am now state certified in 3 areas. Im not sure if ill end up taking any ASEs as i most likely wont work in the automotive service industry.

    Re: Certifications

OOOOOHHHHH I got my ASE Certification in.......PARTS!!!! Didn't even wait the mandatory 2 years at AutoZone to take the test. Expires this December.

I actually got it because my Dad's best friend's Son was racing out a late 80's Escort (more like a fart can and decals) and while bragging about it, said he was ASE certified. My Dad the fleet mechanic suddenly seemed like he was about to actually be impressed when he asked "In what?" expecting and answer along the lines of Electrical, Drivetrain, etc (you know, like going to classes to get certified) the guy proudly says "Parts!" Oh the look on my Dad's face, complete disbelief, he didn't even know they had an ASE certification for parts. I mean after all people come in and Ask for what they want. Five or so years later I'm working at AutoZone and the chance came up so I jumpped on it just to bring it home to dear old Dad. ;D After I got the certificate I brought it to him with a "Guess what I got!" He made me promise not to buy an Escort (and not to drop out of college to become a life time Autozoner). We still laugh about that today. I guess it's good they have a standard, but I think parts is the weakest of them all. The ASE system is a good thing for specialist, I know I do feel better knowing if someone is certified.

I wouldn't mind getting my State Certified Geologist certificate though.
    Escaped on a technicality.

      Re: Certifications

ASE master tech. Big deal. I have A1 through A8, L1, B4 and B5. All it means is that I took the test and knew enough to pass the test. I am a GM tranny man and now a working shop foreman. I still know what I am capable of and let others do what they know. I do not pretend to know everything since I passed the tests. I know better.

Most people certify me as a Jackass, is that higher or lower than A-hole, I have forgotten.

ASE? Yea i was impressed watching an ASE certified idiot drill the lug nuts thru a friends aluminum wheel on his 280-z

He was even less impressed when i asked him what ASE stood for ,when i said in his case must be Anal Sex Expert!

Don't get me wrong i know a lot of guys that are certified that are very good mechanics,But i also know a lot that are certified with PA inspection liscense, that arn't qualified to put a wheel on a lawnmower let alone touch a motor vehicle.

the general requires it , so it keeps the profitability of ase going forever and ever
and makes the state license comission go away , so , plumbers and electricians can still laugh at mechanic's burger flipper -like pay scales
                          truckers strike ? when's the mechanic's strike ?

plus the Pa emissions deal is nothing but a money scam, recert every 2 years and the instructors give you the answers . WTF
Ford also wants it , but not required.
