Re: So , BARRY GRANT has gone under

Heard through the grapevine...it's a plot by corporate interests and big govt to ensure FI takes over the world; shouldn't be at all surpised if Coonce sums it up in his next column. :P

I've never owned a BG product but certainly heard lots and lots of stories -- good and bad -- about both the man and his products. Maybe the truth is somewhere in between? In any case, it's never in the best interests of hobbyists and enthusiasts when there's one less player in the mix; it doesn't help quality, price or after-sale service. And it must be a tough business, going head-to-head against Holley, Edelbrock, QFT, mail-order house carbs plus all the boutique outfits and re-builders.

Leaves me wondering how many aftermarket performance carbs get sold anymore in a year? And how sales have been trending over the last several years?

Lots of this going on in all segments of our
economy.........see it in mine every day

good solid companies that can't get a line of credit
to carry them through......then brings consolidation

in the housing side.....you can have 20% down, credit score
of 750 and still not get a loan

banks are going to have to loosen the purse strings

The banks can kiss my ass! They deserve to be out of business the dumb asses that they are. Twelve yrs ago I wanted to buy a Condo. With SITXTY PERCENT cash down, they wouldn't give me a loan. My Mom's home is paid for and was worth 3 times the Condo. I offerd her as a co-signer. They said no good unless she lives in the Condo. Three yrs later they'd loan ANYONE the money to buy my same Condo that was now worth over twice what I paid with zero money down.

Sometimes the headaches of running a business become to much and it's time to move on. Trust me Barry isn't walking away from this broke. ;)

Basically soak up all the money and hide it, make the business look like it's failing, then liquidate and settle you debts at pennies on the dollar. Only to open a new company a few years down the road after everything settles. ;)

Sadly this is the way a lot of the big performance companies and other companies got their start.

... as he lost his business and his house now is in bankruptcy court, do we really need to heap more abuse on him? At least he tried, and I hope he tries again.

They were new on the market at the time. They also supposedly fixed the annoyances of the Holley they copied. So when you add that to a company that is spending thousands a month on advertising, would you turn down carbs to test?

I know the old Loper ads that used to be in CC, HR, etc... cost them $50,000 a month. Not Cheap!!!!!

The press release noted that he didn't have the money to maintain his tooling properly. If they were having QC issues, they probably did some extra inspection on what went out to the magazines.

Well, that depends. If the mags lie about a product to keep the ad money flowing, they're now a diservice to the reader. I'm not taliking about BG in this instance....but magazines have lied about product before.

I had good luck with a Speed Demon and later a King Demon and I think he pushed Holley as well. Not all innovators are ultimately good businessmen and our current times are testing even the most savvy.

one of the dangers about building a better mousetrap is the original mousetrap maker can take their business back; add to that problem when you're on top, there will be lots of guys out there trying to (and in some case bettering) what you do.

I dunno about the cause(s) of his company's demise, but I respect Barry Grant for remaking himself into who he is, not for what he built.

As a builder, this is an awesome time to be alive because there are so many folks out there making great products... problem is with that kind of fracturing of the market; it's hella tough to make a profit (and it was tough before)...
