this was in the Drag Week forum.

We definitely disagree on the term "proper safety equipment" frankly I find it laughable that they're calling "rollbar" appropriate

I'm not at all qualified to contest any point about cars, here. Not at all. So, from a docile spectatator's slant, I only have to reckon that whatever was on that ride as far as safety stuff was concerned, it must have been adequate if the driver took a tumble like that at speed and supposedly walked away. If it was the safety equipment or just luck, it's beyond my non-car guy mind to even guess.

What boggles me, and always will, and remember I'm not the car guy at all, ....If I have a couple or three hundred thousand dollars....well, never mind. Just never mind. I can't even speak to that. Moot point because I don't have it to begin with.

              was it the wheels?

              they did look skimpy.

              like the car launched violently..

It looks like the Vette gets air, then gets sideways...spot in the road not noticed before?

that area is always windy, flat coastal landand if you listen to the mic on the camera you can hear a gust a wind then right after the car loose it, coincidence ?

Re: how not to drive a corvette at 200+ mph

I wouldn't get in that the way it is built. It literally has less safety stuff the the Escort (I am overbuilt, but I will only be 150 legal per ECTA rules). From what I see, they have a standard 6 point cage in that thing. The racing seat has no head or upper body containment (same seat I have, actually), no window net, stock wheels with acorn lug nuts and wheel studs that look OEM, one shot appears to show the driver looking at the starter, so I am guessing no hans, unless it was one of the models with the sliding strap to allows your head to turn.

Though I do believe that the ECTA does accept the new corvette as having a legal rollbar integrated into the chassis, though I could be very wrong.

No idea from me how it crashed. At that speed it would be hard to tell.

He was lucky it landed back on it's wheels instead of digging in and barrel rolling.

I did a bit of looking around and found some more photos and info. Speculation is that the car was using a cast repro wheel that might have failed, that or the M/T drag radial. There was only a six point rollbar in that car. On post from hinson indicated that they are going to try and get more safety requirements in place for faster cars at the Texas mile. To me that says something about them that they appear to be agreeing that there really should have been more, and that they might be trying to do something about it.

I don't think it was crosswind after watching the video a few times. If you look between 3:45 and 3:48, you can see smoke from the drivers side a split second before the car starts to slide. When it slides, you can see the body go down to the left rear side, which to me would make it seem like a wheel/tire failure. There is a lot going on, but that is what it looks like to me.

I agree that the driver got lucky and I'm REALLY glad he did. I don't want to see anyone get hurt. And I'm also pleased that the TM is looking into higher safety standards. I'll wager that Hinson learned a LOT from this one - probably more than they wanted to learn. Good luck to them in their future endeavors.
