  • Computer virus info

It's been many years since I've had a computer virus
but picked one up on my company laptop last night.
Had to overnight it to our IT folks.

It's one of those that has a pop up box and wants
you to purchase software to fix the issue.

I'm sure part of the scam is to get your credit
    card info.

It was a pretty impressive pop up......call Hardware Recovery
with all kinds of tabs etc.

Anyone know what this one is/called?
    How I might've gotten it?

I usually get all my viruses from porn sites.

But seriously, we have 3 anti-virus programs and I run them 3 times a week. It's amazing how much crap they catch.
Just groovin' to my own tune.

Mine to just recently picked up one called the "Vista Virus Protection 2011" or something like that. No clue where it came from, but it did some pretty bad damage to the operating system. I cleared it out, but it killed the System Restore program and a few other system programs, and now my laptop does some weird things (like asking my what program to use to open *.exe files =P). Figuring if I'm going to re-install an operating system I might as well upgrade to Window's 7, so that should show up any day now.

Interestingly enough, it blew up on me when I went to the Car Craft website.... Not sure if it was coincidence or not, but it was at that moment it showed itself.

In the sixties I used to go to the shadiest of websites with no virus or malware protection and never worried about or caught anything. Times have changed.

I got one a few weeks ago. I was going through my email. It got THROUGH all the tools we have in place, pretty "smart" virus.

I opened an email from one of our longtime website contributors, an elderly lady in Pittsburgh, a family relative of Sue Unit's. My puter went off like a bomb. It was awful.

Some hours later, after I got the box back under control I sent her an email saying I was all but sure her email contained an awful virus.

She went so far as to have a computer technician (Geek Squd? I dunno) come over and comb her puter and the technician said there was no problem found, and no problem found in the email I was so sure set it off.

Lesson learned, I had to apoligize profusely to her. So from that, the thing my box ingested was a time bomb, and it just happened to go off when I opened her email. No telling when or where I got it.

And has been said by lots of folks on earth, it's a dadgum shame there has to be such a thing as virus protection software to begin with. It's just a shame.

What fun would it be to mess up somebody else's computer, and you don't know who you did it to, or how many people you did it to? What fun would that be, and why do it to start with?

                That's a rhetorical question. I just don't understand it.

I've had one of those. No matter what window you open, it just opens they 'buy this software' crap. Most viruses are easy to get rid of though. ctrl+alt+delete it to open the task manager, look for something that's running that's not normal, end task, then search and delete it after you end task. I don't even worry about antivirus software anymore, it never seems to help anyway.

That's how I figured mine out. Highlight, go to process, then from the process, right-click and go to directory it's in. Copied everything out of the directory (and of course it wouldn't copy, so that was good), then deleted the folder, remade the folder and copied everything back in. Definately cleared up the main issue it was causing, but other weirdness started after that and all my restore points were gone. It had done it's work.

Well this virus pretty much took over the puter.
Couldn't open task manager......couldn't get to any files....no recovery etc.

We were able to find one file that was suspicious and deleted it
but still couldn't get it to work.

It's off to my IT department......they'll probably want to
                      know what a bangshift is.
