Since I've never had or even been around snow tires, I have some questions about em. From what I have read about them, most seem to have a pretty soft compound to em? From searching on Ebay, it seems a used set can be had for pretty cheap. If they are made with a soft compound and cheap, why do they not get abused on tracks and for traction in the summer and warm states? There has to be a reason I am missing here. The ones that have caught my eye a somewhat aggressive offroad looking tread, but it's mostly the tread that goes over the side wall, which reminds me of the pie crust slicks and some old bias plys.

They do tear the shit out of the starting lines at tracks. Seen that one first hand at Epping early in the spring when people have run them. The agressive tread combined with the narrow width puts a lot of pressure in a small area and it chews through the nice layer of starting line rubber in a hurry.

I guess those make good reasons why they aren't used that way. For some reason which I know is wrong, I like seeing them on pictures of old cars from like Kansas and Nebraska area. I also have some weird side that wants to see what all terrains look tucked up under the back fenders of a shoe box Chevy. Here is a link to the ones that had caught my eye, size wise is way off, but what I was looking at

I live in NC and also don't know anything about snow tires, don't know if its true but I have heard that they have a low heat rating. I would not want to run them on the highway durring the summer, blow out!Comment

It's really no different than trying to glue them back on after she has her way.Comment

I remember going with dad to the service station to get snow tires put on the family car (Marina Blue '66 Chevelle SS396 new) and him so happy to get the tiger paw red line & studded snow tires. Should have seen the marks in the street each spring just before he took them off.Last edited by Jimsc52; July 6, 2011, 01:35 PM.Comment

Okay, I'll do it....why would a Southerner be concerned about snow tires?
You want the mud paddle things, as long as they fit in the fender wells. If they don't cut the fender wells off. And part of the body, too.Charter member of the Turd NuggetsComment
