What is the fascination with deep gears and compression? Another rant.

And I certainly know what happens when a pedal hits the ground, still have two broken front teeth from the bike launch. I was fortunate enough to use my face to break the fall, nothing too important there.

The Pro stock engines are only 15 to 1 static, but the dynamic compression ratio is about 17.5 to 18 to 1
You gotta gear it for the powerband, and for drivability when its a street car. Buzzing a 403 at 3000rpm on the highway is going to seriously suck, they dont like to stay that high that long, but a 350 chevy needs it since they are incredible slugs with highway gears.

I can say from first hand experience that for '78 and '79 that the '79 Z/28 with 3.73's would walk a '78 TA with 2.56's till 60, where the TA would catch up and by 110 be showing the Z/28 it's tail lights. The Z was done at 110, the TA kept pulling and flattened out about 135-140. Stock to stock...Flying south, with a flock of bird dogs.

When my '78 z28 was stock (auto w/3.42 gears) It would top out faster than 110. It didn't take much work to get it to go past the factory 130 speedo either. I had a firebird with a 455 and 3.08's that I wasn't stupid enough to see where that top out at.Originally posted by TCalso boost will make the cam act smaller

Also the 400 never had 6:1 compression, but putting the big 124cc 455 heads on one will get it that low. With 6X heads static CR comes in in the mid 8s to 9:1 depending on the chamber volume. In 77-79 the W72 400 had 220hp what did the 350 sbc have? Even the 403 cars stomped on the disco era camaros easily. Lots happened with Pontiac after 63, SD, HO, RAII/RAIV/RAV, 428, 455, 14 degree heads with 2.11/1.77 valves. What iron heads are the best? RA, SD, and HO, all made since 1968 and much better equipment than the 62-63 SD stuff.
Methinks you need to find out more about the Pontiac than what you have read in books. You can start with Jim Mino's 68 RAII Firebird 400. Then preuse Jim Hand's 4200lb 72 wagon.

wow brings that in to sperspective that 6 pack was just as fast as my 2001 Grand Prix GT that i superchaged with stock blower and heads from a GTP and off the shelf cam and 3" down pipe stock manifolds
the march of time. the car ran a 12.99 @110mph
when i was younger i wrapped the needle back to 10mph in my '82 GP with 2.73 diesel gears and the '68 350 W31 engine (no tach and it was a 85mph speedo so i think i only hit 120mph). i let off when the front end felt like it was lifting off the ground and steering got scarryLast edited by Mater; July 29, 2011, 12:23 PM.Originally posted by Remy-Z;n1167534Congratulations, man.
