Generator question for flathead

follow the wires. The field is the coils that are inside the housing. The armature is the connection to the brushes. Usually the field will be a smaller gage wire than the armature. The armature is where the power comes from, the field is the "control" that the voltage regulator uses to adjust how much current the armature puts out.

Important to note in squrriel's statement of the armature is where the power comes which is 100% correct. A lot of people think the thing spinning inside is automatically the armature. Not always! An armature can be stationary while the field is what's rotating. This just happens to cover alternators. The reason for this is that the brushes carry a lot less amperage for the field vs armiture and last a whole lot longer.Last edited by Huskinhano; August 3, 2011, 05:30 PM.TomOverdrive is overrated
