Here's a great way to burn an afternoon. The old lady's been after me forever to put a door on the bedroom, so I went up into the attic and found the door that fits our room. I found a great article on this old house about cleaning old wood work with 1/2 thinner * 1/2 murphy's oil soap. If you use the straight murphy's it turns out like shit, but the mix works awesome. Found a knob set on another door and put it in, then found apair of hinges in the basement , but they were in pretty tough shape. I threw them in a pan full of boiling vinegar, and it worked pretty good. If I would have been more patient, it probably would have worked awesomely. The trick is to take a dental tool or some kind of pick and lift the paint of gingerly. The impatient scrub with a wire brush technique because I'm sick of screwing with this shit already technique that I used works so-so. Here's some pics-
