UPDATE at 5:07 p.m.: There were 30 serious and 30 intermediate injuries, Reno Fire Chief Michael Hernandez said.
Tara Trovato, spokeswoman for the Reno National Championship Air Races, confirms an aircraft crashed into the box seats at the races. She said it did not go into the grandstands.
"It did crash and it did go into the box seats," Trovato said. She could provide no additional details.

UPDATE at 5 p.m.: A P51 Mustang crashed in front of the grandstands at the Reno National Air Races at around 4 p.m.
Witnesss at the scene said the plane involved in the crash was Galloping Ghost, No. 177. That plane is piloted by Jimmy Leeward, a real estate developer from Ocala, Fla.
His condition is unknown at this time.
The extent of injuries is unknown, however multiple ambulances were dispatched to the Stead Airport. The plane is entered in the Unlimited class, which include World War II vintage aircraft.
Since 1964 there have been 19 fatalities at the Air Races, now in their 48th year.Last edited by SpiderGearsMan; September 16, 2011, 05:21 PM.

Yeah, the pilot's dead. I saw a guy with his lower leg cut off. I'd say it's probably the end of the Reno Air Races. The Cleveland Air Races ended in 1949 when a P-51 crashed into a house and killed a woman and her child. The plane that just crashed actually raced at Cleveland in the 40's. I wanted to go this year, but got busy at work and forgot that it was coming up. What a tragedy.

Dad just flipped on MSNDC and Maddow was blathering on about the trim tab.... which would NOT cause a crash.
Reminded us both of the Paine Stewart crash - some moron kept insisting it was an electrical problem, while the LearJet guy said, "It ran out of fuel, you idiot!".
Frickin ignorant ass reporters piss me off....Last edited by studemax; September 16, 2011, 07:43 PM.Act your age, not your shoe size. - Prince

I had to go find a picture of the pilots plane...and maybe see something obvious.
first thing that jumped at me was the low profile canopy...gave too much to the rudder.
upon some you tube commentor (of course not to be taken too seriously), another pilot warned of a rudder trim fail, and that of course is the controller for the real rudder...seconds later. bang.
I absolutely hate plane crashes.Previously boxer3main
the death rate and fairy tales cannot kill the nature left behind.
