New Era Opens in NHRA Fuel Coupe class

Just in case you missed it, Matt Hagan was the first Funny Car pilot to go into the 3's this afternoon during qualifying at Charlotte. That's another high point since the NHRA went to 1000 foot fuel races.

Hagan makes another great pass but not quite quick enough to back up his run yesterday for the record. He was on a really great run but green flames started coming from the headers about 700 feet out, then a fire developed underneath the car. The car is smoking pretty heavily just as he goes through the lights, then the Safety Safari has to roll to put out the flames.
Neff went up in smoke about 300 feet out.

What would he have to have ran to get the record?

As I understand, he did back up the record.

But in answer to your question, Matt had to run plus or minus 1 percent of his qualifying run -
so... anywhere between 3.95 to 4.05.... approximately. Feel free to check my math.

In order for Hagan to have set the record he would have needed a lap of 4.029 or better.

I watched it last night, he won the race and set the record. plus beat Mike Neff in the final. I'd say he had a pretty good day.
