I don't like to use the word "Lucky"

My dad was in a motorcycle accident this morning, a lady in a pickup truck turned left into a Wawa in front of him, he hit the truckbed and smashed into it, low speed, still..
Bike is totalled, 1984 Honda V65 Magna, I started learning to ride on that bike.
He was in the hospital for a few hours, my mom and I picked him up, should have taken the F150 so we could bring the bike home.
    He is very fortunate
Rumors of my demise by rollover have been greatly exaggerated.

So glad it wasn't worse, Luck may have had something to do with it, but I believe it is his guardian angel, or his familiar or whatever you want to call it...

    sorry about the motorcycle though

Knowing that your Dad is going to be OK I can ask the question that's on my mind. Was she on the phone at the time? 50/50 chance she was.

I don't think so, I think she was looking in the parking lot before turning to see if somebody she knew was there

Far and away the most common car-bike collision. NEVER take your eye off left-turners coming your way, you might as well be invisible.

Glad he's going to be OK.

Same. Glad he's relatively okay, could have been a lot worse.

It's not that car drivers (cell talkers or not, it's not about that) ...it's not that car drivers would ever intentionally turn in front of a bike, the bike is so hard to see and register on any day by anybody. That, and even smaller darker colored cars, cars the same color as the background or cars the same color of the pavement. If the least bit distracted even by just thought at the time, .... bang. Bad deal. Distraction has a lot of flavors.

Yup. Intent has nothing whatsoever to do with it. When you look to turn left, you're looking for something bigger than a breadbox. Like when you hear hoofbeats, you think horses instead of zebras. "I never saw him" are the four most often heard words after a car vs. bike incident.

Ride as if you're invisible, and you'll help postpone the inevitable.

Uh....PD, I don't ride and I'm not going to, but......that's a pretty bleak statement, when you look at it. I don't at all disagree with the odds, but.....

ROGER THAT... I even drive that way in an F150 cuz it is invisible to a on the phone, late for soccer practice, latte guzzling mom with six screaming kids in the Suburban. Or your random jackass in a BMW'cedes who is far more important than you. We have a lot of both around here. Loose dogs even. And at that, you gotta watch the squirrels cuz their little turd head bones are sharp when they break and you can get a flat pretty easy.

Old pilots, bold pilots, but have you ever seen an old bold pilot?

It's a rider's comment, there's those who have laid one down and those who haven't. Yet.

It didn't take me long to wreck the motorcycle I had when I was a kid (19 years old). I bought it for spite because my parents wouldn't let me have one while I still lived in their house, they made a point of it.

So I moved out and ran a 36-over springer chopper into the back of a car a few weeks later. Ouch. I just didn't know how to drive it.

That has nothing to do with it. Wearing a helmet on a road bike to me is like wearing a jock strap in front of a firing squad, traffic involved. The helmet may or may not make a difference between an open casket funeral and a closed casket funeral.

With a full coverage helmet, maybe the dearly beloved will be able to recognize you after the fact. Maybe.
