well lets see the valvecovers are differnt on the 265 and everything else, no oil pad, the last size change"the400" has an oil filter pad, you can't use the 265 water pump without changing all the front dress bracket.. also think that a 265 intake on a 400 would bolt on but be so missmatched i'd not call it even close to the same, the water jackets, you know the casting he's says is the same isn't even close, main webs, and main saddles and caps, different.. now lets go inside, crank will not drop into a 265 and nor will the rods unless you like your pistons so far down the hole.. the heads that again like the intake will bolt on, will not work on a 400 many reasons way to small and the front dress has no where to bolt to.. yes you can machine anything to work together.. but if you read the post from the start. he say's the ls in his book isn't a smallblock.. it's about the same as a 265 as that 400 is.
yes the 265 and 400 are more the same than fords engine families.. but you bolt on a 400 balancer to a 265 and see how that works out..

feel free at anytime to walk into a parts store and bolt on a 265 water pump on a stock 400 and drive away with the belts still on it.. you can put the 265 valvecovers on it too.. balance and flywheel.. then the 265 heads and intake, then lets go to the track.. hay you now have a deisel power band of 750 to 2800 rpm if the balancer don't shake it apart.. get down the track fast as all the belts will be awol.. and oil covering your exhaust from the valvecovers you couldn't bolt down.. hope you got a fire ex. handy

the external dimensions and looks are close enuff that you cant say they are not in the same family. yes there are plenty of differences . The average guy without looking close can not tell them apart.

you said.. "ya sure and fords casting is based off it too.. they'd both ohv v8's " then "yes the 265 and 400 are more the same than fords engine families. " so all overhead valve engines are related....back to the 49 Olds rocket V8?
