    Haha Manual trans. Definitely not wifey friendly.

    I went to college in Stephenville. Super, super cool town. When I was there (early 90's), the Dodge diesels were the one's EVERYBODY wanted.

      that thing oozes potential - seems cheap to me with no rust - but a clutch will set you back $550 or so, LUK single mass flywheel conversion - which is likely already done. Hard to kill the 5 speeds - would your wife want to drive a 21 foot long truck in the first place? Rhonda drives ours occasionally - she likes driving it on the highway - in town -not so much!

      She drove my 88 5 speed on a short trip while leaving the e-brake engaged - I will never, ever ever let her live that one down, cost me a few hundred bucks ans most of a weekend to fix.

        The lovely Donna drives an F-350 diesel dually crewcab manual trans pickup as a DD. Fast enough to have my insurance broker refer to her as "Donna Andretti."


        (its never good for your insurance broker to append the name Andretti to anyone that you insure!!!!)

            That's awesome, Donna Andretti..... Kelly is pissed that I am selling the 88 f250 diesel that we have had for ten years. It is falling apart in the usual stupid way. Wiper motor here brake line there just the dumb stuff showing it's age/use.

                Yea - it was worth it! New replacement = > $52,000!!!!

                Sure makes the $4500 I put into an engine rebuild, new tq converter, steering box, ac condensor, evaporator, and a buncho other stuff sting a whole lot less... the price on this one based on very little other info and the assumption that it's rust free - seems pretty reasonable to me - but if the manual trans kills it - it kills it - there will be others, just stay away from the 99 there are piles of parts changes in 99 that make it necessary to bring the VIN and sometimes engine serial number or build date with you to buy parts.

                  I plan on doing a thread when I start restoring the '88. I'd love to throw a turbo on it, but I don't really want to get into an engine build. Can a 350,000 mile 7.3 IDI handle a turbo, even if you blow on it lightly?

                        Bob - have you owned it for most of those miles?

                        Have you been religous about cooling system maintenance?

                        The biggest issue the IDI has is with cavitation in the cylinder liners due to poor cooling system maintenance.

                        Back when the dieselstop.com didn't suck - there was a great group of guys there that were religiously attached to the IDI - they will run damned near forever if properly maintained. The problem with pressurizing a diesel that was not designed for it initially is the high static compression ratio you're starting with - they won't handle any where near the boost levels of an engine with lower static compression (powerstrokes regularly see 40psi of boost with modifications) I think the banks kits that were popular in the late 80's early 90's kept the IDI's at or under 10psi which would still be a HUGE improvement over stock. Ideally you can find one of these old kits someone is parting out off an older truck and rebuild the turbo so you don't have to start from scratch with everything.

                        Here's a short want list I'd recommend for you:
                        coolant filter with additive pellets and valves to shut off for filter changes, beru/motorcraft glow plugs (don't even think about champions or autolites) the two bolt gear reduction powerstroke starter, a stancor voltage regulator for the glow plugs, and the power stroke oil filter (motorcraft fl1995) which holds two quarts, allot of guys have good luck with an inexpensive in line electric fuel pump - they make fuel filter changes much nicer (a bbc fuel pump block off plate works on the 7.3) and you have less worry about loosing the fuel system prime which can take a battery and starter killing long time to work out, change all the injector return lines and caps while you're in there too.

                            Good ole Calif....I just had to put a Cat Conv on my 1999 F350 SD 7.3 6SPD CC DRW..... cost of Cat from the dealer.......DRUM ROLL PLEASE............................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ......2,632.41 ....TADA!!!!!!.....NO LUBE !!!!..............and the referee said it had to be DEALER not aftermarket....UGH !!!!....and now the syncros are gone in 2nd gear.... 395,000 miles....I still love it....and it's even brought you fellow BS the make up March Meet LIVE !(Chad filmed from the bed of it backed up to the railing at Famoso)....LOL

                              Milner, I bought it from a buddy that was religious about maintenance. I've put about half the mileage on it.

                              Thanks for the list of stuff to look at. I'll have to get more detail when I get into the build.

                              When it comes to forced induction, I was only thinking 5-7 psi. I've got enough stuff in the boneyard to fab something up pretty easily, including a powerstroke intercooler.
