It's a sad reality - but it's reality. There aren't enough police officers, period. We must preserve our right to protect ourselves.

I pray for that brave woman - that is a lot of weight to carry - I hope she has a good perspective about it and will deal with the emotions that are undoubtedly haunting her, in a positive way.

She lived out in the sticks where 1 cop took care of 100 square miles of land sometimes, thats why he was so long in coming, but it doesn't matter all it take is 5 seconds for someone to slash your throat and I haven't seen a cop make it to the scene in less than that yet!
Thank God for the "castle doctrine" most states have. Just make sure they are in the house and stay there once you shoot them dead!
Also in Kentucky you can shoot if someone is breaking into an out build on your property! You know the still and meth lab building!!!!

Me and another guy found a dead body floating in a concrete water containment at a waste water treatment plant and I laughed and asked the other guy if he lost his hat in the water!!!! Then we both went crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have a canceled lic,,,yet,but I work with about 6 people who do.In the classes they talk about the shooter recovering from taking a life,the sucsesful ones KNOW they had to do what they did or they would be dead,it was the right thing to do and HAD to be done. I think this young lady KNOWS she did the right thing.

Scatter gun might not kill outside to the door and if the pistol isn't a large caliber then I suppose waiting is in order. Too bad she didn't get the other guy too.

Thing is, if they are on the otherside of the outside door they are not an immediate threat.
You just got to wait, they have to be in the house otherwise next time it will be 10 foot from the house, 20 foot from the house, Walmart ETC. The law protects you from getting shot also.

21 minutes talking with the 911 operator and still no cop. That's amazing.

and good on her for caping the thug, and even more awesome the accomplice is being charged with his murder.

I'm not making a negative comment - just expressing surprise at the difference in police presence where she is in Oklahoma and where I live.

That would be hell waiting that long for help - be ever worse for the operator who can't do anything but listen.

Of course, we should be allowed to protect ourselves AND our property I'm just amazed it took till 2006 to put this into effect.

KRS 503.080 Protection of property.
(1) The use of physical force by a defendant upon another person is justifiable when the defendant believes that such force is immediately necessary to prevent:
(a) The commission of criminal trespass, robbery, burglary, or other felony involving the use of force, or under those circumstances permitted pursuant to KRS 503.055, in a dwelling, building or upon real property in his possession or in the possession of another person for whose protection he acts; or
(b) Theft, criminal mischief, or any trespassory taking of tangible, movable property in his possession or in the possession of another person for whose protection he acts.
(2) The use of deadly physical force by a defendant upon another person is justifiable under subsection (1) only when the defendant believes that the person against whom such force is used is:
(a) Attempting to dispossess him of his dwelling otherwise than under a claim of right to its possession; or
(b) Committing or attempting to commit a burglary, robbery, or other felony involving the use of force, or under those circumstances permitted pursuant to KRS 503.055, of such dwelling; or
(c) Committing or attempting to commit arson of a dwelling or other building in his possession.
(3) A person does not have a duty to retreat if the person is in a place where he or she has a right to be.

No they DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN THE HOUSE! HE could have been getting out of his car and been a threat,that is all BY LAW she needed,she could have ventalated the door with him behind it. The key wording is in fear of life or physical harm. By LETTING HIM ENTER she gave the scum the chance to retreat,that was her choice,NOT REQUIRED BY LAW,he did not retreat so she defended herself.
Check the Ok Castle Law online,yes where YOU LIVE may be different,sorry,but TX and OK Castle laws are just about word for word the same.

OH and to add in TX deadly force can be used against sexual assalt too...

I will agree one should have all thier ducks in a row before pulling the trigger,but at least you can IF YOU ARE IN FEAR OF LOOSING YOUR LIFE.

Oh and the fear of the scums family,if they come after you you can shot them too,by law in TX they can not sue...so if mama thinks she's going to cash in because she raised a scumbag she's SOL!

I've been following this story from the start since it's in my old neighborhood. I've still family and friends there, hell it's only 20 miles from me. There's more to it than the news reports tell you.
The sheriffs office is about 20 miles from her house, so the dispatcher called the nearest police dept. for help. They did find evidence in his truck that told them he'd planned the 'attempt' to break in. His buddy that ran said they'd taken painkillers earlier and it's believed that's what they were after, thinking the girl had meds left from her husbands cancer treatment. Apparently her husband had a collection of guns that she sold to pay for his funeral, keeping one shotgun and one pistol. He had taught her to shoot both before passing, so she knew what to do and how to do it, obviously.
The D.A. did charge the runner with murder committed in the act of a felony, punishable here in OK by the death penalty, life with no parole or life.
I don't think very many people are going to miss the asshole that bought it and the guy that survived, he'll be spending quite a bit of time thinking about how he screwed up.

At least the girl is doing fine with the whole ordeal and now that she's in the national spotlight, she doesn't have to worry about paying bills for awhile due to the donations that are coming in now.
