  • The OFFICIAL non official BANG SHIFT CAMERA THREAD !

Ok here goes ! This is a thread about cameras, whether Film, Digital or Movie. So we can talk about equipment, shooting styles, general questions or just post up your favorite shot . It doesnt even have to be automotive related ( did I actually say that?) You can ask " what the hell happened" for the shots that got away...and hopefully somebody can maybe help out.
There seems to be alot of us Bang Shifters that dont go anywhere without some sort of camera, so now we have our only little thread .

    P.s NIKON rules.....

OK So your thinking of buying a camera, and have it narrowed down to a few choices. Here is a link that allows you to compare head to head. I personally having it in my hands to "feel" how it feels and how the buttons and such are located, but it may help.

Have to say I agree with you on the Nikon, I bought a D90 when they first came out (maybe 3 years ago or so), and that thing has been excellent. Even a dimwit like me can get some pretty fantastic pics when you play with the settings a bit..... Gotta love DSLR's, take a ton of pics & just delete the bad crap....

Are you still shooting In program mode? If so , try sooting in aperture priority, That way you get to contol the Depth of field. I try to make every shot count...but my results look more like " spray and Pray!"

I've been shooting all my pics with my crappy lil Nikon L100 that I ran over with the car almost immediately after I bought it. I got it fixed, the Nikon repair facility is right near the airport.

I want a nicer camera, but it's not in the financial cards. But, I'd keep this little camera cause it shoots great in macro and is easy to get into tight areas. I'd keep it just for that.

I guess I can't complain too much about the camera. It does a decent job considering what I paid for it.

            Great idea for a thread!

As I mentioned in a thread earlier today, I have a Nikon D70s but I'm hoping to upgrade to a slightly newer body sometime this year.

Here's what I currently have in my camera bag:

            - Nikon D70s

            - Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5: Kit lens that came with my D70s and it's probably used the most out of all my lenses. Wish it was a bit faster, but couldn't beat it for the price.

            - Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 : Little bit slow when large auto focus adjustments are called for, but the VR is great and it's a huge improvement over the 55-200mm VR I used to own.

            - Nikkor 50mm 1.8: Fastest lens I own; I need to start using it a little more often.
            I take photos.

Scott, you take some great shots with that camera.

A camera is like a guitar..even with the best guitar in the world, if you cant play it , it just makes horrible noises.

Being the D1 came out in 1999, with a 2.7mp sensor, and only shot 4.5FPS, I doubt that they are very popular anymore. I seen them sell for as low as $150.00 on Evil bay.

Are you sure you not talking about the new Nikon 1, that just came out?

An the max ISO of the new D4 nikon is.....204,800 in H2 mode. the same as Canons flagship the EOS-1dx

I use a Canon sx30is (http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/p...ershot_sx30_is), I like it as I am not a very technical shooter, it is sort of an upper-level point and shoot. I didn't want to be saddled with a bag full of camera shit while walking around the track, a show or a swap meet so this camera does everything I need fairly well. Great zoom, good macro, great video even at 720dp. It's only short-coming for me is the pop-up flash, it's not very powerful. I hope to get a hot-shoe flash for this year...

Someday I will get into the voluminous instruction cd that came with the camera but for now I shoot just about exclusively on the Auto setting. I don't get very artsy either...maybe a low angle or an extreme close-up. Another feature I dig is the articulating viewfinder screen, it's cool for over head shoots. I do not use any photoshop type stuff, what I shoot is what I get. I just try to fill the frame and try not to get much back ground distraction (people, light poles etc.) but as we know it is not always avoidable. I like to fully document my subjects, usually with 2 front and rear 3/4 views, engine and interior and lots of details like wheels, emblems, unique parts or interesting decorations. I never shoot crooked and mostly at eye level.

As for video...I have one of those discontinued small 1080dp Flip HD camera that works surprisngly well for on the scene shooting. It has excellent sound and clarity of video but virtually no zoom, so shooting from the starting line down track is futile but for capturing a pit thrash or shooting some car show stuff it's perfect. The zoom on my Canon is killer for getting on track stuff and down track footage is helped by the image stabilization. Check out the youtube link in my signature, I hope to do more video this season.

Well enough of my ramblings, that is pretty much the extent of my ham and egger photography skill-sets, I just you hope guys enjoy looking at my photos and videos as much as I do taking them...

                        ISO 204,800? That's crazy!

Other than the old "We can hit a higher number than you" game that Nikon and Canon play, what's the point of going that high?

The noise for any ISO past 640 or so is terrible with my current body...

Joe, you are proof its not the camera, but the person looking through the viewfinder. I love how organized you are....I have photos stuck everywhere. 3 years ago I lost well over 40,000 pics when the hard drive crashed. I now back them up!
( lets not even think about the video of the GTO I lost yesterday.....F-ing Sony, Damn you to Hell! )

the only use I see is for sports at night.... ( in booogers world thats called Porn) I can shoot up to 3200 with the D300, but try to stay below 1600 . Thats only at night, with a moving target...such as drag racing at a poorly lit track. ( and I still suck )
this is at 3200 ISO , IIRC.

And here's what the camera looks like....
