When I worked at Giant auto supply back in highschool - my manager let me buy the returned holleys for $50 - most of them I rebuilt and sold for $100 or so. I must have had 30 or 40 carbs on my 351c4v. Most of the carbs had obvious problems - wrong parts put on, old gaskets reused, totally mismatched jets, or in one case - the primary power valve was just GONE, not plugged.
My favorite recently was a demon I got locally off craigslist - $50! As soon as I picked it up I knew the guy was clueless - the main body was on the throttle plate backwards! I still have that one - it has the idle eeze set up in the throttle plate - those work really well on engines with larger cams and rough idles.
