  • What is a good price on a 8.50 cert cage?

I have talked to a couple chassis shops and got some quotes on a cage for my mustang, one quote of $3700 and another for $3300. Is this normal rates or a bit high?

For just the cage it seems a little high, I paid about $2500 on my '71 Camaro and they caged it to the dash, made it a full frame car, installed the ladder bars and coilovers, and shortened the 9 inch and built the third member........... I supplied all the parts, even the roll bar tubing, I just paid them for their labor...............

Shawn are you looking at turn key, drop off car and pick it up all finished and trimmed out, or some mix of who does what and who supplies what as TC mentions?

Like everything, a cage is the starting point as the extras add up too. With cage you have to have a window net and have worked out your belts and other items like reinforced suspension pick-up points, siwng out door bars or not, dash bar, through the dash or in front of it. Thoroughly read the current rules and find out who will cert the car in your area and talk to that person before you start the work. They may alos be able to make recommendations as they see hundreds of installs a year.

I would then look at shops that have lots of experince with late model Mustangs and that can show you their work and let you talk to their customers. Time spent up front on planning and being sure who you are working with will save you a ton of time and money later.

BTW I'd spend the extra money on a chrome moly cage and correct TIG welding process even though it will cost more you'll save weight and space.

Seems high for a tigged moly 8:50 but if you start adding stuff like down bars and extras it will climb fast

My friend Terry did the cage updates on my dragster. He's very reasonable on price and does nice work. He used to run a tube frame Corvette he built himself, and has been a track champion at Milan. I could see if he's interested if you want. He lives in Livonia.

Shawn I'm sure you saw this right here on BS.

While its a 25-5 cage, the assemble from the botom technique applies equally to your planmed 8.50 cer cage. Note the inclusion of subframe connectors and other tie-ins.

When I did my cage in 2005 I spent a full week with a good buddy who is a certified TIG guy and had his own shop and a manual bender (that was fun). It was my design, I did a lot of the work and drove the car back and forth each day with no interior in it. Even with all that his time and the materials ran $1,800. This is the one occasion when having a convertable is an advantage.
