  • So school me on TVs

I know nothing about tvs. The wife and I have been using a old 31 inch trinitron since we bought the house some 18 yrs ago. we have a cheapo chinese 13 in in the bedroom.

Im finally decided to stop using the finished basement as a storage room and want to use it as a " Dougs Room. " I hate the term man cave".

the room is 27X27 but there is two brick columns in it, so Im deciding on how big of a TV I can go with. there is two sets of double hung windows on the north facing wall. the east wall is all brick with a fireplace and log box , and the west wall has the entry way, and a 1/2 bath.

I dont know which is better lcd, led projection , plasma . 3d, . so tell me what you like, how big , what brand, pros and cons. I trust you guys more than any salesman!

Stay away from Plasma...old technology...terrible black ....looks washed out...terrible viewing angle.
LCD...best bang for the buck... Samsung has the best black color out there. I own a 60" 55" 50" and 3 42" Samsung touch of color models...these TV's are awesome.... here's one http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+...&skuId=2009087
LED is nice but new technology and still pretty pricey.
3D...I bought one....took it back 2 days later...gave me a headache trying to watch it....

I have a small LED, the pic is fantastic IF you are watching HD...otherwise its no better than an old tube TV. I also have an LCD and I like it just fine. They are dirt cheap now compared to when I purchased mine. If you have the room I am of the school of though that bigger is better. Stay away from rear projection and plasma...there are some nice overhead projection units that I have seen that have decent picture quality and at 70+ inches, its freaking awesome...if I had a room to myself I would go that route.

I guess I'll be sticking with my Sharp Aquus 42" LCD HD for a while longer.

Contrast ratio and resolution are the main things followed by bulb life.....bulbs can be pricey for sure.

We bought a 46" Samsung 1080p, backlit LED LCD back in January from hhgregg for around $1100. It is a "smart" TV with internet capability, the first thing I did was watch my youtube stuff...blew me away. It also has 3D which wasn't at all a selling point but it was there and have never tried it out. We didn't want some monstrosity dominating our living room so for us the 46" was a good size, and kept us within our price range. I would reccomend hhgregg, good prices and knowledgeable sales staff, right before last Thanksgiving we bought all new kitchen appliances from them and had a good experience so we went back when the old TV shit the bed.
I think there is one in Reading.

                    This is the one...

I just picked up a 55" LG LCD 1080p from tigerdirect, on special with free shipping, $899 to the door.

                      It's Rhonda's 40th bday present.

I didn't do a ton of research, but we are not videophiles by any stretch. We've been quite happy with the simple vizio LCD 36" we got a few years ago - it was as big as we could fit into the wall cabinet.

Now I have to get to work building a new free standle mantle over the wood stove to put the new TV on - it's supposed to be delivered by March 5.... tick tock.
There's always something new to learn.

IMO most people overpay by buying more TV than they need. Anyone who's been watching a 31" trinitron (I loved those back in the early 90s btw) is going to be blown away by the most basic flatscreen in HD. My Dad bought a LCD flatscreen and marveled (bragged) about it's clarity etc.. and when I came over to visit he was was watching it in standard definition. Egads!

I don't know your budget, but even a basic $500-600 50" regardless of the hz, contrast ratio, etc.. will probably work for you.

I have quite a few TVs but if I were forced to replace one today I'd probably get this one:
Shop Sharp AQUOS LC-70LE632U 70" 1080p LED-LCD TV 16:9 HDTV 1080p 120 Hz Piano Black at Best Buy. Find low everyday prices and buy online for delivery or in-store pick-up. Price Match Guarantee.

The reason: 1. I'd like at least a 70" in my game room. 2. It's LED 3. It has Netflix built in. (My wife and I watch a lot of netflix)

Cons: There are tvs with faster refresh rates, and it's not a 3d tv. Neither of which matters to me... For the price you could almost get 4 50" plasma tvs.

x2, I can't see you being disappointed by anything new.

I prefer plasma's. IMO, seeing LED, LCD and Plasma side by side playing the same thing, it appeared to me the plasma was the cleanest. I've had a 52" plasma since 2007, and just bought a 65" plasma a week ago because I wanted bigger =P Both Panasonic's, the only brand I'd get for plasma.

As for DLP's, I don't know a person who has owned one that didn't have trouble with it after two or three years. Needing either light bulbs, or some kind of motor, or a whole motherboard. I probably would only take one free if I wanted to put it in the garage. They're bulky compared to the competition and I don't think they can hang on walls.
                          Escaped on a technicality.

I havent checked out the 3d , but I cant believe I would want it. My friend is not a fan of it.....

My buddy stopped over and had a Black Eye.
So I asked how he got it. He said " watching porn in 3d on his new large flat screen TV. "
                              I said " WTH?"
Then he said " His wife came home early, with her friends from work. And she wasnt happy"
then he pointed to his eye!

True story, and I wont mention his name, in case he comes on here.
