I worked at mazda toyota ...until we dropped mazda , oil leaking little buggys , made toyota look like a good car , that was in 98 , best car the made back then was the miata
after hearing about the laughable hi temp rotary problems , I concluded not much has changed at mazda

dagenesta and joe bogey hit it right on the head. Sure, it's fun to be pro-Domestic and it gives you a place to let out all your unrelated frustrations, but Mazda builds a nice car for the money.

And blaming Mazda because it's simply and statistically wiser to trash the cars, makes no sense either. Blame the idiot judges that award multi million dollar lawsuits because some dumb$hit lady in CA spills coffee on her lap...

if Mazda sold the cars quietly in the middle east, all they'd get is bad press from a competitor or the nearest labor union for "pushing dangerous cars off on the less fortunate!!!"

I fail to see why people can't make such a basic connection here.

The cars could have also been used for shop classes and tech schools.

At any rate, a first class waste.

Sick and sad. Same with the Chrysler Turbine Cars, same with the GM EV1s, same with every flood vehicle...in the name of protecting some people who just don't want to believe in natural selection, or to those who have the brainpower to actually understand what they are getting into and the possible consequences thereof..

I understand why Mazda did it. What I don't get is pretty much the same thing as stated above: why doesn't it count against them and why can't they be special-sold, waivers, save-our-ass paperwork and all? I bet they could've actually have gotten away with selling them in a market like Middle East, some Asian countries, Africa, and nobody would've said a word unless the thing exploded three feet past the dealer's lot.

Truthfully, I think it says more about our society as a whole that a company would spend a large (LARGE) sum of money just to destroy $100M worth of possibly tainted product for risk of lawsuits. You know even if they sold them as salvaged vehicles and every purchaser needed to sign a waiver for, some idiot would have an accident with one 3 years from now and file a multi-billion dollar lawsuits saying it was because the car was hanging sideways.

Actually, a lot of those big boats are built in Korea. Hyundai just makes cars as a sideline - they build LOTS of big ships, as well as bridges and other big, heavy stuff.

I don't know, yes it's a huge waste, but atleast a majority of the materials will be recycled for yet more tin can cars from Mazda.
Years ago, when I worked at the local auto auction, a major Ford dealer here in Omaha was flooded out, and they sold Centurian Conversions stuff, like they took the full sized Bronco and made them 4 doors, in the days before the Expedition...there were escorts and then-new contours, with mudd up to the top of the dash...probably around 45+ F350 crew cab trucks alone, fully optioned 4x4's, all leather, lots of 460 trucks...I asked what the chances were of getting a 460 out of one of the trucks...and I about got my ass handed to me for asking the ford rep when he was at the auction with the insurance people, was told they were going to be crushed, then shredded due to liability issues, like the ones mentioned in the mazda story.
All together, there was close to 100 trucks, probably 25-30 cars.
