Dog owners - Beware treats made in China

I know there are a number of us here who are dog lovers...This is the 3rd item I have read about different types of dog treats that are made in China that have caused some sort of illness in dogs.

I looked at all of my food and treats and chucked anything made in China. I keep their diets the same as best I can so as not to upset their digestive systems but sometimes I will grab treats that are on sale...not anymore.

This article talks about chicken jerky causing lkidney failure.

We always check to see where dog or cat food is made when we buy. Heck, I won't buy human food either from china...you'd be surprised how much does come from there!

sometimes easier said than done, especially with dog food - which is made up of ground-up-slow-foxconn workers.

On another note, you guys want to know how good of dog food your feeding your dogs, take some dog food, put it in a glass and then add some water to it, let the dog food get mushy and then mush it up into a paste....We did this with one brand and you would not believe the amount of "Hair" that was in the food, it was so bad, that I threw the dog food away and went and bought a different kind, we did the same test on that brand it and didn't have any hair........

psst, we grow rice here in the US.

"From its meager beginnings in South Carolina, rice has become a major U.S. agricultural product. Nearly 90 percent of the rice consumed in the United States today is produced within its borders. Presently, the United States is the world's most advanced and innovative rice producer. Good call.

This apparently goes back about 4 or 5 years, but started showing up again last fall. I found some good info at the FDA, after asking my vet about it: http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/.../ucm295445.htm

We buy the Bil-Jac brand, made in Ohio. Our two 'kids' love them and I can even get them to do a few tricks for one.

Speaking of food from China......it's been awhile back but we had
some apple juice in cartons for the grand kids.

I just happened to read the label.......product of China.
                        Threw the damn stuff away.

at the bottom of the bar code are numbers... if it starts with 9 60, 9 61, or 9 62, its from china. If it has a 0, its american, regardless of whats printed on the label...I believe this to be correct, if someone has other info on reading bar codes to determine point of origin - please correct me.

This is technically true for the first three digits, but only with the later 13 & 14 digit codes, not the original US standard UPC code. Unfortunately, the number only represents the country that issued the code, not the country of manufacture. Additionally, the human readable numbers below the barcode are sometimes truncated for simplicity so the country digit might not even appear. It's kind of hard to tell without a scanner.

The upshot is, read the entire label if you're not sure. You can check with the FTC and there are also internet databases if you want to look up a particular product.

Knucklehead gets Natural Balance food and treats. The company is owned by the actor Dick Van Patten and everything is made here. No grains and Kingsford's ear infections and itchy skin are a thing of the past since we switched (it took awhile for everything to clear up). We buy US made as much as possible. Sometimes it comes down to imported or nothing given our budget and its always a tough choice. But dog food/treats don't cost THAT much so we go with the good stuff.
