    What Does THIS Mean?

I've got a terrabyte tower hard drive that I use to back up my files, website, photos, etc. Good thing when this puter ate itself a few months ago. Whatta hassle, but backup is just that. ***WHEW***

Now I can't see the backup drive (G). I've done a system restore to a few days ago when I think it was working right, and I still get this. I haven't seen this one before:

I've worn the plugs out. Ran the ckddisk thing, no win. It took a whole lot more than an hour....blue screen during all of that, still can't see the drive.

Historically I can plug the drive in and the computer sees it, by name. No problem, until now.

When I ran the ckddisk thing, the drive wasn't plugged in. So I'll try it again with the drive plugged in. I hate to do it, because if I turn the puter on with that drive plugged in, it takes me to the manufacturer's website and insists that I register it, and somewhy I can't. Stuck in a corner right there. Unplug drive, reboot.

One more try - see y'all back here in an hour or two....

Aren't computers wonderful? Yes, they are. They got us to a party this Friday evening, if nothing else...

Trying the Run/cmd thing with the drive plugged in is even worse:

I'm about ready to put this computer out by the street. Let's just send each other handwritten letters from now on - how much does a snail mail stamp cost these days?

peewee if you do put it out by the street, work it over with a baseball bat first. It's very liberating, ask me how I know.
Just groovin' to my own tune.

Can you see your external drive if you plug it into another computer?

Great point, bishir...no. I reckon the drive is fried. Thanks so much for your help. More money...new backup drive.

what happens when you click start

                    click run

                    type cmd

type G: (make sure G: is your external disk and it's plugged in)

the prompt should change to G:

                    then type chkdsk or chkdsk/r

(you can also try another cable.. they do go bad though rarely)

Nope. Dead as a grocery store flounder. Stinking in the heat. Dead. Dumpster fodder. Danged this drive didn't last but about a year, lots longer than the one I had before that. Amazing what you can't get for your money these days. Just amazing.

Our old computer was an HP 750 that we paid close to 2 grand for with all the bells and whistles, and had problems from day one to the time we finally got tired of screwing with it 5 years later. We now have a refurbished Dell that we paid $225 for and it's worked great for the last two years, go figure. And yes, after backing up all our files I took the HP into the back yard and laid the wood to it.
