There is nothing wrong with the motor itself, its just everything that attatches to it that is pure junk. That engine would last 200k miles easy the rest of the car can only go 100 is the problem.
pretty much my experiance. great motor, crummy add ons. with just a chip, i gained 20hp. it ran strong. never had any problem with the wiring. one thing about all cars.... they last longer if you take care of them and do basic maintain.

Go with the Cavalier. We had 2 from brand new and nothing major on either. THe first one literally rotted away but never went on the hook . The second I sold w/132,000 miles a 96 z24 (2.4) last I saw it it had 200k and was still going good.

Run from that too, I'm working on one right now, with a mystery noise, and a mystery miss. Everything checks out perfect, I mean everything. This is not an uncommon problem either.

            Contour equals RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

If you want something different. Buy a NovaII sedan, and put a turbo 4 out of a solstice in it, and hook up all the unimportant crap lke power brakes, steering, and a/c. Thats my next project. After the super secret LSR car

              Re: Ford Contour

I have owned my '99 for about 7 years now.
              Electrical A$$hole, plain and simple.
Do preventive care, trans flush every 2 years, keep oil about 1/2 a quart above the full mark, and more or less they will go from hell and back. V6 is lazy low, but I love the sound of the DOHC kick in around 2500 RPM...thing pulls ok until 6-7k, but needs a set of headers and a good exhaust. SVT brakes swap right onto the standard SE model.
4 banger car is alot easier to work on.
Mine has taken a number of +100mph runs and still fine.
Alternator is a bitch, 3 feet of socket extentions.

Agreed on the engine wiring on early cars, wrap gets brittle.
SVT was a mechanical a$$hole, but god they run when they run.

I have debated about dropping in a 302 with a C4 for some fun in my POS when it dies, but it'll go to the crusher, plain and simple when my wife or I kill the thing.
I got my money out of the extended warranty though, 3 times what it cost me atleast.

Dash recall, PCM, throttlebody, upper and lower intake gaskets, brakes, among the stack of stuff I have paperwork on my POS from the dealer. IMHO, not a bad little car to bum around in, cheap to own and insure.

IF I were you, stick her in the honda. Less bitching from the woman.

I totally forgot about the dash recalls. Either dash pad replacement, or a brace put in to keep it from warping. That's awesome.

my 98 had no other problems other than what i mentioned earlier and i had it for 122,000miles and 6 years. i ran the heck out of it, but took car of it. about the alternator,if you noticed, there is an access panel behind the front wheel...great idea, except you need to take the bolts out from the opposite side, which leaves the exhaust in the way. did you know car designed have a college edgeacation :P

I've done that job twice in the same day, on a 6cyl. Ford sold one with a bad regulator. i thought it was pretty simple actually. Took about 30 min total. each time or less. The Bolts facing backwards are easy with a ratchet wrench

                      Re: Ford Contour

Hey Cobra, I got my help off the CEG owner's website. Talk about a bunch of guys with their panties in a twist over stup stuff...my wife rear ended a truck with our car a few years back, and I had to buy a front clip, I found a SVT clip, same color and I was happy as hell no respray was needed. Those guys about had a heart attack over the fact mine was not a true SVT, "how dare you put SVT on a SE" blah blah blah. I got sick of it, and said my car, my money, F you...that wnet over well, and I pretty much don't bother asking for help from the pricks, but anyways...I discovered a 1" holesaw, and some new grade 8 threaded bolts, and I can do an install in around 20 minutes now, no removing the exhaust or any other BS like the manuals call for now.
Like I said before, they are a mechanical A$$HOLE. But, I still like the car. It reminds me of my Brother's 1996 Maxima, only it cost me a whole hell of a lot less, and was optioned about as good as his Max was.

yeh, but with the access panel, if the bolts were turned around, it would have taken 10 min.
still, i liked the car. a lot.
