    Chasing 200

My brain's not big enough to do more than one forum, it's not even capable of haunting more than one subject-branch on a single forum.

So here I live - General Discussion on BS. Multi-task challenged.

I'll bet this video has been viewed to death on the LSR branch here, or on ECTA, but in case anybody's like me and never leaves here....this IMO was very well done. RE the April event.

This makes it look like more .... uhhh "weather" fun than it actually was.

Dang I didn't even watch the race, was freezing to death, hiding inside the car. Kudos to brave guys like DF and Keith and the volunteers like Right Pedal Steve and everybody else out there in that stuff.

Red's left headlight is visible at 5:05. Yep, everybody in line waiting for better weather.

So, anyway, kill me. I haven't seen this video posted here on General...

I just have to believe that was a great production, that video. As much as I love to hate the media, and all news is just news, print and video, that's one of the few I think was done really well. Only because I was there, and yeah, that's what happened. With a few slants I didn't even pick up on while I was hiding in the car staying warm and dry.

But after watching it again tonight....okay, I was bound to film my run(s) somehow and the easiest thing to do was to go high-tech and rubber-band the little video camera to the rear view looking forward. I've made myself a DVD out of that video and Dr. Phil would say I'm obsessed with that 36 seconds, even if Sue Unit has not said so yet. The DVD shows the run through the windshield in real time, while the one on Daily Motion is jerky and stops a lot, at least on my computer.

So all that to say, if you have a camera in the car, why do you point it at the driver? The guy last year who set the overall record on the Texas Mile, the video was on him, driving. I just wasn't thrilled. In the above video we got to see DF reach up and throw the chute.

That's...well, I want to see it through the windshield. Maybe I just don't have a very good artistic taste. But the cross view of the driver...I'm sorry but I think that view is just for the driver to enjoy - here's what I looked like doing it.

      But that's just me.

Cool to see it. I knew they were making it but this is the first time I've seen it. However, they completely missed the record-setting Diesel truck - guess it wasn't "good" TV as it doesn't make much noise.

The guy in the good old black and white pickup sure makes more than enough, and you went faster than he did, I'm pretty sure. That's what I thought about with that one - more noise than speed.

Until I talked with the guy. Mighty nice feller, he would stand outside and open the door to the truck in the rain for anybody who walked by wanting a glance or a photo inside the cab. And he's got the original mechanical steering in it - said it gets pretty hairy trying to aim it over 100. Dang, so many stories there, all lined up waiting to go. So many. 175 stories for sure.

So I have a question, the twin turbo motor I'm building will be going into a 80's SS Monte Carlo, I kind of changed my mine from the 1980 I was originally wanting to put it in...... I plan on doing some LSR events like the Texas mile and will be building the car to go over 200mph....... So the questions is as a newbee or rookie to LSR racing what is the fastest they'll let me run before they let me go all out??

Dan, I think the real reason you got busted at the start line in April was because you didn't have a parachute on the tailgate to slow all of that stuff down at the end!

If you bring something that'll GO, you have to qualify upward - 125, 150, 175, then 200 on runs. If you break out of that routine, Keith will, uhhh....show you the door for safety reasons. Do you have a copy of the ECTA rule book? It's rich with information, though sort of hard to interpret in places.

And the car will be inspected for safety before the event, and it depends on the level of safety equipment you have, as to how fast you'll be allowed to go. All that's in the rule book too.

EDIT: Better answer, you have to earn your way in stages to be licensed to go 200. A very limited list of equipment required to go 200 would be full roll cage, head restraint system, fire suppression system, two parachutes, bonafide racing seat with side head protection, where the turbo exhaust has to be placed, all of that is in the rule book.

The rich retired guy in the 13 Shelby will NOT show up and be allowed to go as fast as that car will go, with the factory three-point seat belt and nothing else. Sure 'nuff seriously built cars go 200. It's all a whole lot of fun, but the levels of protection make all the sense in the world, as does the fact it's a money pit. If money doesn't matter at all, build it and go for 200.

And ya I got the book, I'll read into what I need, I'm sure a lot of it is going to be required at the drag strip anyway for the times I'll be running........ My goal is to build the car to do mid to high 8's in the quarter and run 225mph in the mile............

                          Wow, that'll be fun!

What got me about the ECTA rule book was where I landed in the mix of things. I knew I wanted to go 135. A lot of the passages say if you're going to go 135, you have to have a fire suit and fire balaclava, etc. I forget exactly without pulling it out and looking at it again. I'm sure I drove Tonya crazy with questions about the sentences in the rules that apply to 135 - I'm a words- guy so, do I need that to go 135 or not? Or do I need that to go OVER 135? It's just the words in the book.

To go 200, the rules are more clear - you KNOW you have to have all of that stuff. GO TC!

TC, i have never been to texas or read their rule book, but i have heard it diffrent than the ECTA. As i recall they require less safety equipment in TX.
