  • Early Hemi owners...

    There are 2 kinds of people in this world,
    - those who own a Hemi... and those who want a Hemi... ;D

    Who else got one of those Early lumps of steel with plugs through the valve-covers?

    I finally belong to the first group now. Earlier this year I found a 392 Hemi here in the Netherlands.
    I hauled it home along with a Dana70-rearaxle housing after a 2 hour drive with my '62 wagon.

    The (once seized) motor will be rebuild with .020" pistons and a slightly bigger cam. I had bad the crank-journal welded, ground and nitrided. After the rebuild the 392 will find it's place in the '62 Chrysler wagon.

    Poor motor looks like it's previous owners didn't believe in oil changes. I have a flat head that suffered the same abuse.

      You got that right.
      I have tried numerous of things on the engine (inside) to get it clean, but nothing worked;
      Petroleum, engine degreaser, thinner, brakecleaner, ovencleaner... nothing worked.
      The oil had turned into a rubbery layer covering the entire engine on the inside and it's parts.

      Here's a rod which felt like it had a rubber-coating on it;

      I also found some sort of rubbery-blob, stuck at the rear of the oilpan. It took a screwdriver to pry it loose;

      The OvenCleaner treatment... to no avail;

      Finally, I had the engine-block cleaned in lye, which removed 90% of the gunk inside.

        It SURE is amazing as to how some folks treat a Car,Engine,ect. Looks like that thing hasn't seen a fresh Oil change it years. But,all that's changed now...... ;). Good luck with the rebuild . ~OO6.

          I've owned at least one Hemi since I was 16, I'll be 50 in about a week. Traded my last whale motor off to a guy for a BG 1140 cfm dominator. I've got the 528 in the picture under the trucks hood now. Dave

            the only hemi I own is in sad shape, a 330 desoto that had sat with water in the pan for a long time...needs 8 sleeves to bring it back to life, so it just sits in the shed in pieces.

            Using "lye" to clean a block is the normal approach here in the states, we call it vatting or hot tanking.

            Oils have come a long way in the past 50 years, also PCV helps keep newer engines clean.

              I noticed I had put up a wrong pic in my above post. That pic shows what I had accomplished with my cleaning attemps.
              This is how the block looked like after the lye and using some scotchbrite-work on the factory machined-surfaces;
