Animal Killers on the Road?

I wiped out a whitetail at about 55 mph in a 64 Lincoln. Michigan has more deer than - jobs - for sure. Found it about 150 yards away on the opposite side of the road wrapped around a mailbox post.

I try not to hit anything unless it's a poisonous snake near my house. In that case I ran over a cottonmouth last week. I moved a baby turtle today.

Last week was interesting. I turned into the neighborhood and there were literally 1000s of little hermit crabs in the road. It sounded like driving on corn flakes.

Usually it is minor that way.. Swerving to miss a deer or a dog may actually start a chain of catstrophic porportions...
They do have a thing called " failure to maintain lane of travel"

I was raised on a farm (literally) so I have kind of a liberal attitude about animals and how tasty they are.... however, a bit of caution for the snake-runner-overers.... Did you know that one of the "things you need to watch for" if you're a tire guy is snakes? run over a rattle snake, get a flat, take it to the tire store. Tire guy dismounts the tire, runs his hand on the inside of the tire looking for the "nail" and gets poisoned. Happened in Eastern Washington with amazing frequency (you'd figure once ever dozen years to weed out the Darwin award winner, but no, more like every week another gets bit). Last one I remember, a guy had a puncture in the side of his tire; apparently the snake had struck at the tire, got caught (oh that image is just priceless to me), then the teeth broke off in the sidewall. Guy who started the repair didn't notice what was making him bleed for almost an hour.... lost most of his hand.

As for the rest of the roadkill cafe, the most entertaining was seeing a cougar get hit by a semi doing 60 mph. Cat never knew what hit it - one piece ended up against the meridian, the other on the shoulder. State patrol (you call them in so the food bank can harvest the game) is called - now this I read about the next day in the paper - apparently there was a knock-down, drag out fight between two of Klickitat County's more colorful members (tree doesn't branch there) over who was going to get the pieces of the cat. Still, was an amazing thing to witness - big poof of blood, and two pieces spinning off the roadway

Story I read of a pioneer who was bit by a rattler in his new boots... Nobody knew why.. Left a widow and 2 kids, boy and girl...
When the boy grew up to wear his "man of the house" boots that were his daddy's, he also got sick and died.or close to it..
The mystery was solved when a new sawbones came into town who just studied this new fangled thing about snake bites..
Either the kid got saved but crippled or it was solved after his death.. There might have been a step dad between the boy and his dad.. The venom is forever, pretty much...

I had a friend who lived in Grants Pass that lived the mountain man's lifestyle (died 10 years ago at 105, panned his last summer). He panned for gold each summer, then lived on the proceeds for the other part of the year. I loved his philosophy about killing rattle snakes. Even if the snake was minding its own business, he'd shoot it on the theory that while that one wasn't a problem it's offspring could be.

I feel that way about the wolves they are reintroducing...
Talked to a guy who works for ODFW, he says it is a failure... And a joke..
He flies in the copter counting game and looks in on the wolf (he calls) problem..

2012 Challenger,second new car Ive ever had.I know that rut season to be on my toes but with the drought you never know where they will be.June 9th heading out of town at dawn and Bambi's brother shows up out of no where on the Kansas Turnpike.I did what I was told in drivers Ed.No options hit the animal.80mph and I punted his ass to the ditch.Nice 6 pt and if I would have had a way to butcher him I would have.Toateld the car and helped my credit ratingHe even crossed where there were signs.An animla in the wild I dont care,Hit a puppy that crossed the road while chasing a rabbit that SUCKED!!!! Owner was there and we took it to the Vet and we were to late. Still haunts me.

You know your a real animal killer when you can kill a bird with a low slung 3rd gen T/A. The 2 I killed this year though were with a super duty and a Toyota Cressida.

i dont try to hit anything,,well maybe snakes i dont trust'em.. .i figure turtles have a rough enough life,,,so they get a pass..i never ever swerve to miss an animal....,,,i brake but im not hitting a ditch,tree or on coming car to save a dog/cat/rodent...ive hit deer,armadillos,chickens,birds,possums,snakes,racc oons.....
