I took my dinosaur TV apart thinking it would be lighter in pieces. Turns out the picture tube weighs 90% of the total(wasted my time). So, how do I safely dispose the picture tube (I hear they implode)? Thanks

Anyone ever dispose an old TV's picture tube?

cover it with some blankets, and break the nipple off where the connector plugs on to the back of it. It should not implode, it will just leak in air real quick.
do this at your own risk....My fabulous web page

Put it in a fairly heavy (thickish) bag of some kind, drop a brick on it, put in glass recycling container, done.
They do implode quite impressively. Well, it was impressive to us as kids, haven't broken one uncontained since 1986.Of all the paths you take in life - make sure a few of them are dirt.

Yes, leave the nipple exposed so you can break it off.
I've never had a violent implosion from a picture tube, breaking off the nipple. I've probably done about a dozen of them.
Be careful. Wear glasses, gloves, etc. Just in case.My fabulous web page

Put the tube face down on something with the connector/pins sticking straight up..
Take a small hammer and lightly hit the center part of the connector, this will break the seal then you can chuck the tube into the dumpster...
Just my $0.02...Last edited by M Code; October 17, 2012, 03:12 PM.
