  • Are 944s THAT bad?

I've hear some rumors about porsche 944 being extremely expensive to maintain and drive. How true are these rumors?

This turbo popped up in my area, and it looks like it could be fun. Im mostly just thinking at this point.

I think there might have been a thread on this awhile back, but i cant seem to find it

    Yes!!!!!!!!!

Look at it this way, my friend had a 928, which is a way more desirable car than a 944, he dropped about $25,000 into it to get it running somewhat reliable, then I just found out a few days ago he sold it for $7500.......... They are a Money Pit!!!!!.....Run why you still can!!!!.....

Rock auto lists clutch kits from a surprisingly low $555 to a painful $1046.

When I worked in the parts store, a 928 was available for cheap. I checked the price of some parts - its clutch was $800. I passed on the opportunity to own a porsche.

        yes they're bad.

its got a hint of higher compression porsche fun...and blows things like a honda, with suspension that can't even drop to earth for hemerrhoidal save the cheap chassis mentality.

I drove one. as if I did not like inlines enough..that was the last higher performing one.

There are no replacement parts for that available at your local Advance/Autozone/Orielly's/NAPA/or PepBoys stores...... But - they can be ordered for a slight additional charge.....

If you cut out the struts, floorpans, and firewall, and install a new perimeter frame, then install an aluminum LS and six speed with a 9" out back...then gut the wiring harness and install all new wire... you may have a reliable, cheap to fix car there....maybe.

Can't say from experience, but I just looked up some prices for routine maintenance stuff on O'Reilly's web site. It ranged from "hey, that's not as bad as I thought!" to "HOLY S#!T!!! Are they on crack?!"
              I'm probably wrong

perfect Chump cars.... hate on them (deservingly) all you want, but they still handle like a porsche should and are very respectable track cars.... and yes, they're expensive, but so is life.

My friend was a tech at Stoddard Porsche & he used to do side jobs at home.
I lost count of how many 944's he fixed heads on, they're total garbage, but the pay out was great.
Best thing to do to a 944 besides scrap it is put a Chebby motor in it, it's guaranteed to run after that.

Tard, I thought you liked Vdubs - after all that Porsche is far more Vdub than porsche

A lot people confuse the 944 with the 924 which were finicky at best.... 944 are slow (and where the 944 is slow the 924 would be described best as glacially slow, if you own one, never race a cement truck, you'll likely lose), but again, both are legendary in their ability to handle (especially if you lighten them).
Heads come from being stupid and not replacing the water pump when it leaks (not an easy job).
