From what I see here at school- it's an appliance thing. Right now I am helping a friend choose a new car after his Tracker rolled on black ice. All he cares about is how it will serve him point A to point B. Sure, practicality factors into my car selection right now, but when I walk out to the Tahoe I smile. It's kinda old, looks useful, has enough get up to make me happy. Most of all, it's got those tiny imperfections that make it unique. They drive some of my other friends crazy because it's not as easy to drive as their Honda.

The lot up here is filled with late model Tauruses, Escorts (not even cool old Escorts), Civics and other bland cars. People don't even care that they are bad cars for up here becuase they are "good enough". I usually tell them "Sure... Now put it in neutral so I can pull you out".

I think you are oversimplifying this. I know a lot of young men (high school and college age) who like cars. They don't have the cool hot rods or even rice rockets simply because they can't afford it now. Do you have to have cool car to be car-centric? I don't think so, but then what do I know?

I just dont get folks who aren't carcentric, I dont really have a lot of intrest in stuff where there isnt some kind of car or automobilia/tools or whatever, involved. It actually makes me a little nutty sometimes and drives my wife crazy. My ideal eutopia would be just hangin around all day tinkering on cars, in a warmer climate.
just put "cyclone03" in the upper left corner, this is me and has been from Sep. 4,1979. 21 days before my 16th birthday I got my first Mustang,an auto.By my next birthday I had swapped the engine, installed an Edelbrock F4B,headers,ignition,2 cams,a 4 spd,9in 3.50 gear,31 spline,3 sets of wheels/tires.....next year paint interior......................I have not stopped.

4 years in the AF,in AZ. I knew 6-8 guys that could match me wrench for wrench....BUT that was '82-'86.BY '94 our, yes added a wife in 87, '89 5.0 had 3.73s and Flowmasters and my USAF wife was the biggest "carguy" in her squadron. One Airman asked her what mods he should "have done" to his '93 GT, and was flat blown away when she gave him a list of common mods, about what they cost and in what order they should be done! I did the 5 minute tune up and did his gears at the shop I was working in,by then I was doing the stuff for guys that I had be doing with dad since I was about 10.

And there it is....,no STRONG carguy to teach a young one,no HANDS ON car guy at age, well ever.At least not ones that get dirty.
I've only had 4 cars that I have taken from driver to shell and back, and except for my 64 Comet(roller when sold) never sold one that wasn't better for me owning it,I loose money on EVERY sale.

But Carcentic? I bet just a fraction of US males that would say they are a "carguy" would change their own oil,and less do a brake job, forget replace a rear end, rebuild a transmission (auto or manual),swap/rebuild an engine, assemble the engine themself?

I get a lot done when stick and ball childrens games are on TV.........

I think everyone loves cars, the difference is what kind of cars they like. I was at a race not long ago when a yellow Lamborghini pulled up to our pit. The attention that car recieved was amazing, everyone one had to come over and take a look. Some walked passed a top fuel car while it was running on the jack stands. The guy that owned it was a car guy for sure, even though I doubt he could tell the difference between a spark plug and a lug nut. I look at this way, we all like to eat but not everyone can cook.

I found an article on line about a guy who has written a book making the point that our entire society is structured around the car - the layout of both our cities and countryside, the design of our homes, etc. Hard to argue against his logic.

I think being carcentric can take on different forms.

For many of us it's about the drive train and related components..........back in
the mid '80's or so it was what was in the dash board (radio). It was more about how many
amps you were running as opposed to horsepower.

Most of us couldn't afford cool hot rods when we were younger either.......but I think we found ways to 'improve' our cars with what we could afford. I'm certain we all (who are car-centric) made it a point to at least 'service' our cars........don't see alot of that today, among 'those who like cars', yet are not car-centric........
