  • Smokestack Lightnin' - And Other Shop Stuff

Followup on the shop furnace installation thread:

The chimney is now in place. I have a friend who's a roofer and the tricky part is flashing this into a steel roof with all the convolutions, etc. - and I didn't want leaks!

Buster slid a new piece of sheeting from the eve to the center of the stack and then overlapped the SS boot with the original sheet from the peak to the stack. With some foam sealant and other roofer tricks all seems good. Pics to follow.

When Buster was up there I had him look for leaks as I had a drip right over the hoist bay. Turns out that the original installer (I hired guys to do the siding & roofing) had overtightened all the screws with their built-in neoprene washers. If you do that the seal squishes out and the Sun can deteriorate it, which mine had. The quick solution is to replace all the screws and not overtighten them. To be on the safe side, the guys used a commercial caulking and put a dollop under each screw and then run in the new screw. We had a serious rainstorm tonight and all looks good but of course we won't know until a few years pass. So I had two guys screwing on my roof for two days - but I'm very liberal and didn't care.

Those of you with pole barns need to be aware of this! I was certainly clueless.

Is that something like "if your uncle Jack got stuck on your roof" question?

I had that chore once, me and my brother..
      thousands of screws.

there is a slipping chuck that clicks for sheet rock, a guy invented a maksehift setup for the roof. Keep the drill screaming, let the chuck slip the torque. one screw after another.
at a good speed snapping lines seemed redundant.

The roof on mine is a long story......... I'll be getting up there in the spring to correct some issues unfortunately. I will double check how mine was done.

all metal roofs that are not "standing seam" have the "rubber washer screws"

I've been fighting roof leaks for years, I've replaced a bunch of the old screws with new ones, but the leaks are still there in a few spots.

I think this is why Morton and some of the other "premium" buildings strongly suggest shingles. Standing seam sure is nice - and pricey!

I think I have narrowed it down to the rubber washered nails that hold down the ridge cap - getting those out without mangling the metal around each nail has me stumped - so - I live with the leaks until I can find a solution.
There's always something new to learn.

The version I know is (I think) the original by Howlin' Wolf. The guitar lick is famous.

Buster said the same thing. There's a couple of solutions - one that works for sure. We're trying the industrial caulking method and we'll see how that works. You can also coat the roof with a roofing compound then lay in a fabric reinforcement (I'm guessing fiberglass) followed by another layer of the compound - THAT'S the sure cure. None of this is cheap!

                        Yeah, there ya go.

                        Lookin' good Dan.

EDIT: Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters are at the top of my list as far as the best. Muddy had more songs because Willie Dixon wrote a bunch for him, and that pissed Wolf off.

Maybe I was thinkin' of the version by Blind Melon Chitlin. (Let's see who gets THAT reference!)

Willie Dixon was one of the very few to actually make a living in The Blues. He ran the joint for the Chess Brothers and wrote a BUNCH of blues classics including Wang Dang Doodle for Coco Taylor. Listen to the bass line and you know it was written by a bass player.

they spray mobile homes and camp trailers with a sealer , polyurethane of some sort I believe. What about that?
