  • Tires ... thoughts on General ....

    Grabber AT2:

Application is a 2001 Ford Expedition, in town driving, limited highway, and mountain roads (some dirt) in the summer. Not looking for "off-road" tires just a decent all terrain that does decent when going camping.

    Give me your experiences .....

Kinda Pricey at our local retailers.. went with Falken Rocky mountain ATS at discount tire... much cheaper, great performer...also sold under America's Tire... believe that they are spec'd to discount/America's tire...

I was looking at the Falkens, but the comparable Falken in the same load index are about $34 more than the generals. I will be pulling a 12' enclosed trailer w/max weight of 3500#s, so I wanted to step up to the XL over the SL.

I can't speak at all for the Grabber, but on my Tahoe I'm running Firestone Destination A/Ts. They are similarly priced, and for me they are great- quiet, they hook up well on snow and ice, and they aren't that rough on the ride. I can't really speak for summer time off road, but as well as they handled dragging the Tahoe through 18-24" of snow with another truck in tow, I can't imagine they'd be bad.

This is what I have on my CrewCab, they are Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S, I have over 30,000 miles on them and they have been a great tire.... No complaints......

Find the perfect tire for you. Yokohama Tire offers the ultimate in performance from all-terrain off-road tires, to high-performance track tires, to maximum reliability with our all-season tires. Find automotive tires and tire dealers near you.

Years ago I sold them to farmers in the area and they LOVED them. They lasted well weren't to noisy and most of the guys pulled large cattle trailers with them and had no problems and survived really well on the grid roads. I had Generals of different types on some of my cars and always had good luck with them.

i would avoid the falken tires.I took a set off of a customer truck that still have 5/32nd tread, that are basically a rib tire now. the all terrain tread is only a little more than half.

the general is ok, I really like the cooper at3

              i assume 265-70-17?

i list the gen in sl or load range e no XL. sl is 2679 lbs per, so should be plenty for your combo

coopers are avail in P -6 and 10 ply

And that's my second choice ... The cooper. I am a touch Leary of the general ... It looks a lot like a BFG A/T and I was never a huge fan of that tire. It sucked out loud off road (mud) so that why I'm looking for opinions.

I love coopers, however my brother put at3 on his f150 and saw a drop off in mileage.

odd, I have never had one of my customers complain of mileage loss, unless they upsized their tires.

Yes I did ... sorry I didn't update. Went with the general grabber HTP and I love them .... about 2k on them already. I got them at discount and also got the general rebate. They gave me free road hazard too ... took a bit of haggling, but they threw it in.
